Run, breathe, love, move freely… DAWEI celebrates the living and invites us to a party in the middle of nature to discover a purer, calmer Spring/Summer 2021 collection.
For this very special season, Dawei Sun has imagined a collection that plays on contrasts. Drawing inspiration from the past as well as the present, it unites West and East in a constant dialogue between communion and clash.
The aesthetic resonance is to be found in the work of Japanese painter Yuki Ogura, who paints women dressed in kimono, holding themselves with ease in very natural, relaxed postures and expressions. Contrast.
The painter likes to use traditional Nihonga painting techniques to deal with contemporary concepts. Contrast.
Past and present, tradition and new rules, East and West, or no borders at all… Through its SS21 collection, Dawei Sun asks questions without certainty, without really providing an answer, leaving everyone free to make their own interpretation. And what if beauty lies precisely in questioning?
The shapes are modern, constructed and minimalist, and as always with DAWEI, it’s all in the details. The shirt-dress in sober, pure white cotton poplin has puffed sleeves for a more extravagant look. On a vintage-inspired shirt, the draped neckline is transformed into geometric pleats for a more contemporary look. Silhouettes are free. Military-inspired details can be seen between the lines of well-behaved garments, which are turned upside down by clever unbuttoning. Airy dresses let themselves be carried away by the breeze of renewal.
As so often with DAWEI, we surprise, we reverse, we shock, but always in a very subtle way.
Trench coats, jacket/trouser suits, dresses, the rediscovery of an “everyday” wardrobe twisted by asymmetrical ruffles, are subtly changing the game. Contrast.
Midnight-blue prints stand out against a palette of soft greys and pinks. Contrast.
Finally, sportswear elements shake up the codes of more classic garments. Contrast.
