On May 31, 2016, for the presentation of its new 2017 cruise collection, Dior treated itself to absolute luxury: a fashion show in a sumptuous setting, that of Blenheim Palace in England, where Winston Churchill was born, and invited several hundred customers to come to the palace aboard a luxury train: the “Dior express”. The show took place in the sumptuous setting of the castle’s library. Following the departure of Raf Simons, Lucie Meier and Serge Ruffreux of the Dior design studio took over as interim artistic directors, pending the arrival of a new artistic director.
The stakes are high, since a new boutique has just opened in London, one of the largest in Europe, and it presents a major commercial interest and a media event eagerly awaited by buyers.
The great Dior classics are revisited in this collection, inspired by the “Tailleur Bar” of the 50s, with long basques that become mini-skirts, combined with pants or a dress worn over baggy pants, superimpositions of lengths and shapes, voluminous sleeves, brightly coloured floral prints, the addition of numerous pockets, the small scarf is tied at the wrist or used to fasten a jacket.
It’s the Parisienne of the New Look years revisited for 2017, full of novelty and creativity, freshness, elegant silhouettes and ultra-femininity. Basques are reworked into drapes reminiscent of eighteenth-century baskets, layered over close-fitting dresses. Silhouettes are more elongated and supple, with flowing dresses. Chic and elegant are the watchwords of this collection. Refined in every detail, with embroidery, pearls and sequins. The coat remains Dior’s undisputed centerpiece: long, pastel-pink coat with large pocket, belted in black, or yellow with gathered sleeves, large pocket, asymmetrical half-front, ruffled on one side and flat on the other.
The 55 models presented are undeniable proof of the impeccable modernism of the new designers. Eveningwear was not forgotten in this fashion show, with long, satin dresses showing great décolleté. Dior reinvented itself with vinyl models: pants, black coat dresses with slightly flounced waistbands.
