RADIOMIR 1940 MINUTE REPEATER TOURBILLON GMT – 49mm
Each culture has ancient customs in which the passage of time is punctuated by the sound of bells or other instruments. In haute horlogerie, this fascinating heritage is embodied by an extraordinary complication: the hour and minute repeater mechanism, which enables a chime to be triggered simply by pressing a pusher.
For the creation of the new Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT, Of cine Panerai drew
its inspiration from its own history, which has been inextricably linked to the world of the sea for over a century, and from the marine tradition of marking the passage of time with a bell. On ships in particular, this custom played an essential role in the life of the crew: it was used to wake up the sailors in the morning, to bring them together for meals and to indicate the n of each watch. But it was also used to warn of a danger, to convene an assembly or to indicate the presence of the ship when visibility was limited by fog. This ancient tradition is expressed today through the chimes of this exceptional new Special Edition, created by the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Panerai in Neuchâtel.
For the Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT, Officine Panerai has developed the new Manufacture caliber P.2005/True to the brand’s philosophy, this movement innovates by aiming for optimal structural simplicity, synonymous with practical advantages and greater ease of use.
The chime is activated by means of the push-button located at 8 o’clock. This one rests on three hammers, which come to strike as many stamps xed to the movement as to the case. With three hammers, as opposed to two in a classic configuration, it is possible to create three different notes. This enables the carillon to play a melody, just like a bell.
The first tone is the lowest. it marks the hours, while the last one, the most acute, strikes the minutes. Unusually, the second timbre produces triple chimes at an intermediate pitch, with each triple chime sounding at ten-minute intervals, compared with fifteen in a conventional minute repeater.
Here’s an example to help you understand how it works: to indicate 10:28, a conventional minute repeater would produce ten chimes for the hour, another chime for the quarter-hour, then thirteen individual chimes for the minutes. With the Minute repeater Carillon d’Of cine Panerai, the sequence is composed of ten low-pitched chimes for the hour, two triple chimes for the minutes (i.e. two ten-minute intervals) and eight high-pitched chimes. This system, which reduces the total number of chimes, facilitates and shortens the sound indication of the time. it also corresponds to the way time is indicated on digital watches.
The quality of the sound propagated by the minute repeater is enhanced by the properties of the red gold case and its architecture, formed of two autonomous welded parts. This structure optimizes the empty spaces within the enclosure to improve the sound quality. The manual work carried out by each master watchmaker gives each watch its own unique sound, which is both similar to other models and imperceptibly different.
The most remarkable feature of the Officine Panerai Minute repeater Carillon is its minute repeater function, which operates in two separate time zones. The second time zone is indicated on the dial by the center arrow hand and the aM/PM indicator located on the counter at 3 o’clock. Here again, simplicity is the order of the day in the selection and activation of what is basically a dual hour and minute mechanism. The device has been designed in such a way as not to affect the integrity of the movement.
To prevent accidental activation, the winding crown must be turned slightly in order to manipulate the chime via the pusher located at 8 o’clock. The required degree of rotation is indicated by a black segment on the side of the crown: when the indicator is visible on the dial side, the chime cannot sound. However, a simple press of the crown push-button is sufficient to select the local time or the time of the second time zone. The red Ht/Lt (local time/secondary time) indicator positioned at 8 o’clock makes it possible to differentiate the two time zones. Like the minute repeater mechanism, the hand-wound P.2005/MR caliber, the result of four years of research and development at the Manufacture’s Laboratorio di idee in Neuchâtel, is distinguished by its Panerai tourbillon regulator, which can be admired from the dial and caseback sides thanks to its sophisticated skeletonization. In this system patented by Officine Panerai, the rotation of the tourbillon is different from that of the classic tourbillon. With the traditional version, the balance cage rotates continuously on itself, cancelling out any variation that might result from gravity and possible shocks. With Panerai’s innovative mechanism, the tourbillon cage rotates on a perpendicular axis instead of parallel to the balance wheel. The P.2005/MR performs two rotations per minute, compared to one for a traditional tourbillon. a cadence that is reflected in the indicator that turns in the small seconds counter located at 9 o’clock. Thanks to its increased speed and specific structure, the mechanism is able to compensate very effectively for any deviation in rate, thus ensuring extremely high chronographic accuracy.
The sophisticated skeletonization work contributes to the acoustic performance and allows the cutting-edge technology and details of the P.2005/MR caliber to be admired. all the elements that make up the dial are mounted directly on the movement or the flange, engraved with the words “radiomir 1940 Panerai” and “Minute repeater Carillon”. The minute repeater’s small hammers and the two barrels, which store a power reserve of at least four days, are visible through the openworked caseback, which also reveals the power reserve indicator paired with the movement.
The new folding clasp on the alligator leather strap perfectly matches the skeletonization of the other components. The buckle, signed Panerai, is made of 100% of the same material as the case. adjustable length, it is designed to offer the watch optimal protection on the wrist.
Aesthetically, the codes of the new
Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT
are characteristic of Panerai style, with the emblematic Radiomir 1940 case (49 mm in diameter) and Super-LumiNova®-coated baton numerals and hour-markers. The 18-carat red gold case, intense in color, boasts excellent properties in terms of corrosion resistance, thanks to its percentage of platinum, and sound propagation, thanks to its particular hardness.
For this watch, made as a Special Edition and produced only to order, Officine Panerai has provided customizable options (choice of bracelet, hands and other elements) and the possibility of replacing the red gold case with another material.
Another essential element for any Panerai watch worthy of the name, the Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT (PaM00600) is water resistant to 3 bars (or about 30 meters).
