Inspired by the cicada’s different phases of metamorphosis, Japanese designer Bowie Wong has created a collection that makes bold use of volume.
A theatrical collection, in keeping with the couturier’s work. A theatricality he takes from his past. Working for a company for several years, he developed a taste for detail and the dramaturgy of staging. Combined brilliantly, he offers spectacular collections in which clothing becomes the agent of stories. More than an accessory, the dresses are composed of volumes that give them an air of fairy-tale contemporary art.
Bowie Wong wants to turn sewing into a storybook: what will happen to this cicada? Will summer catch up with her lightness?
Between white and black, the models are like airy breaths on the catwalk. Wearing delicate ballerinas, fine, precious materials are combined with rigid structures to create the illusion of a molting body that wings tend to pierce.
Illusion: isn’t that what the theatrical stage is all about? That in-between place where reality becomes illusion, where the spectacle takes precedence over the everyday for a few hours. Bowie Wong’s stage is imagined as such.
Imbued with abstraction, the designer’s dresses speak of savoir-faire. Superimposed materials and pleats: the designer’s work is precise.
This cicada won’t be homeless come winter. No, because its silhouette is the result of a lot of hard work. The magic of this fairy tale will bring a welcome touch of eccentricity to revive winter. A winter full of “Metamorphoses”.
