Les Sources de Caudalie: the vineyard palace unveils 12 new suites

Every year brings its share of lovely surprises at Les Sources de Caudalie. After the opening of Chartreuse du Thil and its 11 guest rooms in 2013, spring 2014 sees the blossoming of twelve new suites and an indoor swimming pool. Gathered in a charming “Fishermen’s Village” overlooking a small lake, they offer a beautiful surface area of around 55m², to which can be added 10m² of terrace. The rooms are like the villages of Cap-Ferret: Jane de Boy, Le Port de la Vigne, Le Canon, La Pointe… all names evocative of the beaches and hamlets that line the Bay of Arcachon.

Inside Presqu’Ile, the 1st building, which rises to one floor, the decor changes: the forest and its luxuriant ferns take over the corridors and cover the ceilings. Fern Canopy wallpaper by Little Greene plays on contrasts in beige and anthracite, while an accumulation of terracotta pots amazes under the staircase. Davey Lighting’s Dockside pendant lights line the stairwell, marking the way up to the first floor, where the suites “La Plage des Américains”, “Le Mimbeau” and “Bélisaire” invite you to take a trip… The second complex in the Village des Pêcheurs is accessed by a footbridge on stilts that flies over the bushy massifs emblematic of the Atlantic dunes, and skirts century-old poplars. The “Les 44 hectares” suite stands out with its red cladding, imported by Bordeaux Bois Anciens from former Canadian barns.

The walkway also leads to the legendary “Le Pigeonnier” suite. Like an echo of the L’Ile aux Oiseaux suite overlooking the estate’s other pond, this duplex room stands proudly at the heart of the Village des Pêcheurs. Its privileged location in the middle of the small lake offers its occupants the illusion of a journey out of time. On the walls, Deyrolle wallpaper adorned with flamboyant parrots sets the tone. The furniture features pieces designed and created especially for the place, as well as reissues from the 50s. The wainscoting on the walls gives the place a cabin feel, accentuated by the warmth of the wool drapes. Colorful touches, such as the poetic aviary lamp by Matthieu Challières, the flashy orange and red Jieldé reading lights, and the original frames by Deyrolle, add dynamism to the whole.

The Village’s other suites also play the “buco-chic” card, dear to Alice Tourbier and a true signature of Les Sources de Caudalie. Coral-print Pierre Frey Lavezzi wallpapers combine with limed wood panelling to create a cocoon-like atmosphere. The walls are decorated with photos, witch mirrors and butterfly collections, giving each suite the ambiance of a family home.

These new suites, which can accommodate up to 4 people in a separate living room and bedroom, mix vintage and vintage furniture in a resolutely contemporary spirit. For example, articulated Gras lamps sit alongside Scandinavian consoles by Dasras, and DSW Eames fiberglass chairs (Modernica) sit alongside Match coffee tables by Calligaris, with their light wood and mustard double tops. Mini Pipistrello by Martinelli, Caboche Piccola by Foscarini, Fato by Artemide… the most emblematic pieces of Italian design light up the rooms. Asiatides’ fish-scale sofa ends, made of porcelain, are colorful commas that punctuate a serene, exotic ambience. Like the woollen curtains, the Chevrons rugs from Toulemonde Bochart warm up the ensemble, while the Ming model stands out with its blend of oriental influences and pop colors. Cascading flowerpots welcome bathers at the entrance and in the changing rooms. In this way, the reign of plants takes over the entire estate, in response to the incredible vineyard environment of Les Sources de Caudalie. And it won’t be long before the restaurants take advantage of this, since a vegetable garden has been planted at the foot of the gastronomic restaurant La Grand’Vigne! Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Masse will be able to enhance his dishes with produce from the garden and introduce guests to rare varieties of herbs and spices. With these 12 new suites and new facilities, Les Sources de Caudalie is more than ever an essential destination in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, as much for lovers of fine wines as for city dwellers in search of relaxation… a veritable vineyard palace.
