Until 18 November, the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT gallery in Tokyo is showing the TYPE-XVII JAXA project by A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE: jacquard jeans woven from images of Antarctica taken by a climate satellite.
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE announces “TYPE-XVII JAXA project”, a project carried out with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The jeans are designed from images of the Earth captured by GCOM-C, JAXA’s climate observation satellite, also known as “SHIKISAI”.
The Maison’s jacquard weaving techniques transpose these data into a garment, in line with the concept that defines it: a piece of cloth. SHIKISAI observes the planet every day and provides information on climate change, natural disasters and the management of natural resources.
The project selects observation images of Antarctica, one of the most extreme environments on the globe. The ice sheet covers most of the continent and is about two kilometres thick on average. Vast expanses of white ice contrast there with the deep blue of the ocean, visible through the cracks.
Two cuts carry these images: a straight jean and a wide jean, each available in four sizes. The wearer looks at the Earth from space through a familiar garment.
The project is presented from 21 October to Wednesday 18 November at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Gallery 3, in the Midtown Garden of Tokyo Midtown, in Akasaka (Minato-ku). Admission is free. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays; for Roppongi Art Night, it stays open on Saturday 31 October from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The exhibition is organised by ISSEY MIYAKE INC., in collaboration with JAXA.
JAXA, which coordinates Japanese aerospace activities, provides the raw material here: its Space Technology Directorate I develops satellites dedicated to Earth observation, disaster monitoring, communications and navigation, and continuously tracks sea ice, forests and greenhouse gases.
