When the Médoc thinks in white

The first white vintage of Château Tour Prignac is not a mere widening of the range. It reflects a deeper adaptation of the Médoc vineyard, long identified with red, to global warming and changing habits of consumption.

With ten hectares planted in 2022, the estate makes white a laboratory of precision rather than an exercise in style.

The 2025 vintage of Château Tour Prignac arrives as the Médoc Blanc appellation quietly redraws the Bordeaux wine map. The gesture is significant: in a territory dominated by cabernets and merlots, planting Sauvignon Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon amounts to acknowledging that a terroir’s identity is never definitively fixed. It shifts with the climate, the soils and the expectations of taste.

The estate has a solid geographical argument here. Located in the north of the Médoc, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, it benefits from a maritime influence that slows ripening. The predominantly clay-limestone soils also provide a relevant foundation for whites seeking tension rather than opulence. The planting of ten hectares in 2022 therefore does not seem opportunistic: it rests on a renewed reading of the place, at a time when freshness is becoming a strategic viticultural resource.

The winemaking confirms this intent. The blend, dominated by Sauvignon Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, is mostly made in stainless steel tank. Part of the Sémillon does pass through wood, however, while malolactic fermentation is avoided in order to preserve natural acidity. The ageing combines thirty per cent one-year-old barrels and seventy per cent stainless steel tank, with lees stirring. This choice builds a balance between rectitude and texture: the tank maintains aromatic precision, the wood adds relief without imposing an overly demonstrative vanilla signature.

The wine claims floral, citrus and pear notes, extended by a nuance of toasted hazelnut. More than this tasting vocabulary, it is the structure of the wine that matters: a full palate, supported by a fresh, mineral tension. At 12.90 euros, the wine sits far from the speculative strategies that sometimes surround new Bordeaux chapters. Its cultural interest lies elsewhere: showing that a Médoc estate can evolve without denying its origin.

The estate’s environmental work — reasoned viticulture, grass cover, preservation of woodland and meadows — completes this reading. These practices do not in themselves constitute a revolution, but they place the white within a broader reflection on the vineyard’s resilience. The next challenge will be to measure this first vintage’s capacity to age, then to observe how the grape varieties evolve as the climate imposes new trade-offs.

The Médoc Blanc from Château Tour Prignac is therefore worth less as a novelty than as a signal. It reveals a vineyard in the process of shifting its certainties, and perhaps of redefining what it means today to remain faithful to a terroir.
