Kerzner offers seven nights in two stages: four at One&Only Cape Town, three at Shamwari Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Shamwari is the new resort of Rare Finds, the group’s brand. It is this second stage that deserves close examination.
The stay, as Kerzner describes it, includes daily breakfast in Cape Town and full board at Shamwari, with two safaris or activities a day. One night is complimentary at One&Only Cape Town. Shamwari Air, the group’s airline, offers preferential rates on its private charter flights linking the two stages. No price is given.
In Cape Town, the hotel sits on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Its rooms and suites overlook the harbour or Table Mountain. The One&Only Spa occupies a private island and offers treatments linked to the phases of the moon. For the rest (Lion’s Head, the vineyards, the peninsula, the Atlantic), the hotel refers to a selection of experiences that it organises itself.
At Shamwari, the figures are the group’s own: 25,000 hectares, more than 5,000 animals, 275 bird species. Accommodation consists of six lodges and one Explorer Camp, 62 rooms in all. Set against the stated area, the density exceeds 400 hectares per room on average. This is an order of magnitude, and it assumes the whole estate is counted.
The group places conservation at the heart of the reserve’s identity. It cites an educational wildlife rehabilitation centre, the Born Free sanctuaries for big cats, the Rhino Haven project, rescue operations and a vulture breeding programme. No figures accompany them: no animals taken in, no individuals released, no share of the stay’s revenue allocated to these programmes.
Cape Town can be visited from many addresses. The interest of the itinerary therefore lies in Shamwari, and it will be measured by what Kerzner makes verifiable of this conservation work.
