Gabriela Hearst Spring-Summer 2027: Locating the Hands Behind the Ornament

Presented in Paris on 5 October, Gabriela Hearst’s collection links Afghan craft traditions with a contemporary wardrobe. The provenance of the gestures is what is at stake.

A small mirror framed by embroidery is not a mere surface effect. In its coverage of Gabriela Hearst’s Spring-Summer 2027 collection, Whitewall describes the use of shisha on a wool twill drawn from existing stock. The magazine ties this work to a collaboration with Turquoise Mountain and to a tribute to the women of Afghanistan.

Ornament retains a provenance

The report also mentions miniatures protected by rock crystal in silver mounts, as well as embroidered pomegranates. The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode confirms the Paris presentation on 5 October and provides access to the collection’s lookbook.

These elements usefully shift the reading. Speaking only of decorative richness would erase the techniques and the women who pass them on. Conversely, naming a tradition is not enough to explain a collaboration: the place given to the artisans in the design and making deserves as much attention as the appearance of the pieces.

What the collaboration allows us to say

The link between fashion design and Afghan craft is documented by the coverage of the collection. The sources consulted do not, however, make it possible to quantify volumes, remuneration or lasting effects on the workshops concerned.

The potential strength of such an approach lies in the precise visibility it gives to the work. To judge it fully, it will be necessary to follow this work beyond the runway, to the pieces produced and the economy of the relationships that make them possible.
