Balenciaga Summer 27: Piccioli sets volume in tension

For Summer 27, Pierpaolo Piccioli places the architecture of outerwear and bags at the centre of his reading of Balenciaga.

Enveloping the body without weighing it down: this is the tension Balenciaga chooses to foreground for Summer 27. The official presentation of Pierpaolo Piccioli’s collection stresses drapes, assertive contours and the relationship between fullness and ease. It places this work particularly in outerwear and bags.

The reference becomes a question of volume

The house invokes the contrasts of High Renaissance art, notably the dialogue of shadow and light. This reference takes on a sartorial meaning when it joins an opposition of forms: what contains, what unfolds, what seems dense or leaves an impression of freedom.

It is on this ground that the proposal deserves to be examined. The architecture of a coat and that of a bag can answer each other without using the same material or serving the same function. Together they contribute to the overall proportion of a silhouette. The bag then ceases to be considered as a mere punctuation added to the outfit.

An intention to be distinguished from its effects

Balenciaga describes a reinterpretation of its historical codes. This positioning designates a worked continuity; it is not enough to establish a break with previous seasons. Likewise, the ease claimed remains an intention until it is tested in wear.

What is at stake in Summer 27 lies in this gap between presence and lightness: keeping the strength of a form while opening up the space it grants the body.
