Chanel – The House of tweed, No 5 and feminine freedom

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first boutique in 1910 on rue Cambon in Paris. In 1921, she launched Chanel No 5, the first fragrance to bear the name of a fashion designer – composed by Ernest Beaux with a then-unprecedented concentration of aldehydes. To this day, the House remains privately owned by the brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer. Virginie Viard has been artistic director of the collections since 2019, before handing over to Matthieu Blazy in 2024.

The Coco Chanel legacy

Men’s jersey applied to women’s fashion (1916), the tweed suit (1920s), the little black dress (1926), the 2.55 bag (February 1955, hence its name), two-tone shoes (1957) – Chanel systematically borrowed from masculine codes to free the female body from sartorial constraints.

No 5, Coco Mademoiselle, Chance, Bleu de Chanel – four of the world’s best-selling fragrances. Chanel Beauté – lipstick, foundation, skincare. Chanel Jewelry – Camélia, Comète, Coco Crush.
