LUXURY , why luxury possesses us from Nicolas Chemla

Luxury seems to have taken possession of the planet: dazzlingly healthy despite the crisis, from New York to Shanghai, it dictates our dreams, sculpts our bodies, smoothes our skins and redesigns our cities. For millions of individuals, it defines the ultimate dream. It has its temples, its masses, its gurus, its priests, its crusaders – all working to convert our souls to its new religion. And what if behind this phenomenon lies the advent of a Luciferian spirit? Not the red Devil, scarecrow of a bigoted ideology, but, going back to the very sources of what he embodies, Lucifer as a principle of freedom, rupture and creation. This is the surprising and unsettling premise of this fluid, precise essay, which reads like a literary and societal investigation, mixing pop and academic references, from Lady Gaga to Annie Le Brun, from Marlowe to Morrison. A relentless, expert and personal point of view that aims to refresh our view of luxury and Lucifer alike.

A beautiful book that makes us think about our relationship with luxury.
