Artistic Director at Christian Dior from 1996 to 2011, John Galliano surprised everyone every season with his creativity and showmanship. For the Spring/Summer 2002 Haute Couture show, the English designer drew his inspiration from the tramps he encountered on the streets of Paris, paying tribute to “the ingenuity of the underprivileged in dressing themselves” while highlighting the House’s ideas laboratory and the quality of Dior’s ateliers. The result on the catwalk: untucked dresses, jacket arms held in place by clothes pegs, superimposed pants, torn effects… The collection caused a scandal and the show created controversy…
