A podium of pink foam pimples and a program note stating: “Fear of emptiness versus modernism”… Everything about Mary Katrantzou is conceptual, thoughtful and precise. The designer asks herself a multitude of questions, which she seeks to transcribe in extremely well-crafted garments. The first models appear wearing large flounced skirts, coordinated with bustiers, as if sculpted on the body in Victorian style. Then follow duffle coats embroidered with flowers, or fur dresses and coats, covered with PVC, plastic and colored picots on the bottom or pockets. Large belts tighten the waist, playing with volume. For it’s always a question of texture and feel. Clothes take on new dimensions. What appears uncluttered is in fact ultra-constructed. And in the end, the essentials of these original garments are completely wearable. Note the accessories: baguette bags with pink picots…
