Swiss watchmaker Longines once again draws on its multi-faceted heritage, highlighting its long tradition as a designer of railroad watches. Inspired by a timepiece from the 1960s, The Longines RailRoad takes up its sober, distinctive aesthetic, as well as its technical features.
Punctuality is the key to a safe and reliable rail service. With this in mind, a precise, high-quality timepiece is an essential piece of equipment. The winged hourglass brand’s watchmaking expertise has quickly won it the favor of numerous international railroad companies. Longines put its name and experience at the service of the railways, and by the beginning of the 20th century, it was equipping the employees of numerous companies, notably in Romania, Serbia, Persia, Italy, Chile, Canada, the United States, Turkey and China, seduced by the remarkable technical features of Longines timepieces.
The Longines RailRoad is inspired by a model developed in the 1960s, which had to meet precise aesthetic, quality and precision requirements in order to be used by railwaymen, and bear the “RR” (for Rail Road) designation that is found on both the current and original dials. The additional indication “280”, referring to the caliber that powered the original model at the time, has been replaced on the dial of the reissue by the inscription “888” in connection with the movement that gives life to this new timepiece.
The Longines RailRoad takes up the sober aesthetics characteristic of railroad watches. The 40 mm-diameter steel case houses a highly reliable L888.2 automatic caliber, produced exclusively for Longines. Ensuring excellent legibility, the domed off-white polished dial features an hour-circle composed of large black Arabic numerals – including a 0 in place of the 12 – and a 24-hour scale subtly enhanced by glossy black lacquered hands. A timer completes the time reading. The back of this model features a finely worked engraving inspired by the original decorations on pocket watches designed for railway services in the 1920s. An elegant black alligator strap adds a further touch of refinement to this model.
