Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, presents the first model in a new line of digital compact cameras. The Leica Q features a full-frame sensor and a classic fixed focal length, intuitive ergonomics and a bright, wide-angle lens. Equipped with the Leica Summilux 1:1.7/28 mm ASPH, it offers a wide, natural image field in difficult ambient light conditions, making it the perfect camera for street, architectural and landscape photography. Combined with the full-frame 24 MP CMOS sensor designed for this focal length, it enables discreet shooting and delivers a beautiful, richly-detailed image rendering even when working with ISO 50,000 sensitivity. The option of choosing between macro mode, autofocus or manual focus gives the Leica Q the greatest possible creative freedom to meet your photographic requirements.
To capture the decisive moment, the Leica Q features ultra-fast autofocus, the most powerful in this category of digital compacts. As a result, it focuses almost in real time.
The new Leica Maestro II image processor, adapted to the Leica Q, exploits the data communicated by the sensor at extreme speed, delivering up to ten frames per second at full resolution. The Leica Q’s integrated 3.68 MP viewfinder enables you to control image composition at all times and in a wide range of lighting conditions. The smallest details of the subject are perceived without latency, as soon as the user looks through the viewfinder.
Thanks to a digital framing selector, the Leica Q offers additional creative freedom: an alternative framing can be selected at the touch of a button. In addition to the full-resolution 28 mm focal length, 35 mm and 50 mm focal lengths are also available. Corresponding image frames appear at the touch of a button. This enables the photographer to see what’s happening outside the light frame, and so react quickly to changes in the subject’s periphery, as with a rangefinder camera. While the selected frame is saved in JPEG format, the entire image with a focal length of 28 mm remains in DNG format.
Even in terms of design, the Leica Q retains the Leica DNA: concentration on the essentials. The “made in Germany” seal of quality guarantees the use of long-lasting materials: the hood is milled from a solid block of aluminum, the housing is made of magnesium, all inscriptions and markings on the knobs are laser-engraved. The thumb rest on the back of the device and the palpable diamond pattern of the leather covering underline the successful combination of form and function.
All Leica Q functions are clearly and ergonomically arranged. The clear menu provides quick access to all important control options, while also offering individual operating options: the autofocus range can be comfortably selected via the corresponding button. This can be done using the touchscreen, or the focus can be set at the touch of a finger. Live-View supports manual focusing with two electronic aids. Focus peaking presents the subject in sharp focus, with edges marked in color. Live-View zoom lets you control the subject’s range of sharpness by enlarging up to 6 times. The Leica Q allows the photographer to keep an eye on everything, even without electronic assistance: the basic photographic parameters (aperture and shutter speed) can be read and set at any time on the corresponding control elements, even when the camera is switched off.
Video shooting with the Leica Q also benefits from exceptional brightness and extraordinary bokeh: the quality of Full HD videos matches that of professional shots. When shooting in MP4 format, and depending on the subject, you can select between 30 and 60 frames per second. The integrated noise filter guarantees sound quality.
The Leica Q features an integrated wi-fi module for digital transmission of photos and videos and remote control via WLAN using a smartphone or tablet.
The Leica Q app required for this purpose can be downloaded free of charge. In addition to the viewfinder image and remote shutter release, it is also possible to set and release the aperture and exposure time using the corresponding camera.
The Leica Q is available now from your Leica dealer.
