Apple presents the iPhone XR

With an A12 Bionic chip, a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, an aluminum and glass design available in six superb finishes, Face ID and an advanced camera system

Apple has announced the iPhone XR, incorporating the same cutting-edge technologies as the iPhone XS in an all-screen glass and aluminum design, with the most advanced LCD ever used on a smartphone, a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display and six beautiful finishes. The iPhone XR features the powerful A12 Bionic chip with a latest-generation Neural Engine, TrueDepth camera, Face ID and an advanced camera system that creates beautiful portraits using a single lens. The iPhone XR will be available for pre-order from Friday, October 19, and in Apple Stores from Friday, October 26.

A revolutionary new design in aluminum and glass, available in six new finishes

A stunning all-screen design pushes the limits of the iPhone XR’s screen. At the front, the toughest glass ever designed for a smartphone is surrounded by a color-matched band of aerospace-grade 7000 Series anodized aluminum, and at the back, the glass design allows the device to be charged wirelessly.

The iPhone XR comes in six new finishes: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED. A seven-layer coloring process creates beautiful shades in the glass rear panel, and the aluminum contour and camera edge are matched to offer a result of great elegance. The new design is splash- and water-resistant, with an IP67 rating that protects the device from everyday damage, including coffee, tea and soft drinks1.

A portion of the profits from the sale of iPhone XR (PRODUCT)RED is donated directly to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, which provides testing, counseling, treatment and prevention programs specifically aimed at eliminating the transmission of the virus from mother to baby.

Most advanced LCD screen on a smartphone

The stunning 6.1-inch all-screen Liquid Retina2 display offers industry-leading color accuracy, with support for a wide color gamut and True Tone technology for a more natural viewing experience. Precision-milled glass, advanced pixel masking and sub-pixel anti-aliasing technology allow the screen to follow the curves of the device, while a new backlit design extends the screen into the corners.

The iPhone XR supports fast, fluid iPhone gestures like touch to wake, swipe up to display the Home screen, swipe down to access Notifications and Control Center, and the new haptic touch feature that lets you tap the Home screen to instantly launch the camera or flashlight.

Next-generation A12 Bionic chip and Neural Engine

Apple’s A12 Bionic processor is the smartest and most powerful chip ever used in a smartphone. It features a 7-nanometer chip – a first for a smartphone – offering unrivalled performance in an even more energy-efficient design. The A12 Bionic chip features a six-core Fusion architecture with two high-performance cores up to 15 percent faster, four energy-efficient cores up to 50 percent more efficient, a quad-core graphics processor up to 50 percent faster, the powerful Apple-designed Image Signal Processor (ISP), a video encoder and more. All these enhancements enable unprecedented experiences for games, photography, video editing and apps with ultra-sophisticated graphics, while continuing to deliver excellent battery life. Even with this level of power, the iPhone XR offers up to an hour and a half more battery life than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The next-generation Neural Engine is designed for advanced machine learning for multiple uses, from photography to augmented reality. A new eight-core design enables it to perform up to 5,000 billion operations per second, instead of 600 billion with the A11 Bionic chip. This power opens up new possibilities, such as faster plane detection for ARKit and new functionalities using real-time machine learning. For the first time, the Neural Engine is open to Core ML, enabling developers to create apps that use this ultra-powerful machine learning engine. Core ML running on the Neural Engine A12 Bionic is up to nine times faster than with the A11 Bionic chip, with only a tenth of the power consumption.

Face ID, the most secure facial authentication system ever designed for a smartphone

Thanks to software optimization and a more powerful Secure Enclave, Face ID is faster on the iPhone XR. The TrueDepth camera uses ultra-precise depth-sensing technology whose capabilities and security are far superior to those of two-dimensional facial scanners to unlock the iPhone, use Apple Pay, access secure apps and many other features, with just a glance.

Advanced wide-angle single-lens camera

The iPhone XR features a 12-megapixel wide-angle f/1.8 aperture lens with an all-new sensor, offering faster auto-focus. The pixels, both larger and deeper, improve image fidelity and low-light performance for photos and video. Enhancements to the ISP, Neural Engine and software algorithms enable portraits to be captured with a beautiful bokeh effect. Intelligent HDR enhances detail in highlights and shadows.

The new Depth Control allows users to adjust depth of field in real-time preview3 and a posteriori to create striking portraits with a magnificent bokeh effect. Selfies are further enhanced by the enhanced Portrait mode on the front TrueDepth camera and Portrait Lighting for spectacular studio-quality effects.

Wireless technologies

The iPhone XR uses LTE Advanced technology for fast download speeds4 and inaugurates dual SIM5 with the use of a nano-SIM and a digital eSIM card.

Delivered with iOS 12

The iPhone XR is equipped with iOS 12, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. iOS 12 transforms the way users perceive the world through augmented reality, lets them rediscover and share their photos, and makes communications more expressive and playful with the new Animoji and Memoji. Screen Time lets customers better understand and control the time they spend interacting with their iOS devices. Siri Shortcuts enable any app to use Siri, and new privacy features help to better protect users on the Web.

• The iPhone XR will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB models in white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED at an Apple resale price starting at €859 on apple.com and in Apple Stores, as well as from Apple Authorized Resellers and selected operators (prices may vary).
• Customers will be able to pre-order the iPhone XR from Friday, October 19.
