Comics Selection
Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to film adaptations.
If you’re a fan, or just want to go back to the source, here’s a selection of the best comics of the moment, including “Superman Anthology” (pictured), which contains 15 mythical tales of the first and most famous superhero (Urban Comics). From his beginnings in 1938 to the present day, legendary artists such as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Gil Kane, Frank Miller, John Byrne, Alex Ross and Grant Morrison will help you rediscover the Man of Steel in a superb collector’s work. A must-have, as we await the next film adaptation next June.
In parallel, don’t miss the first volume of “Geoff Johns presents Superman” (“The Last Son”), with Richard Donner, director of the first “Superman” film, on the script (“Urban Comics”). And don’t forget the 2nd volume of the adventures of the Justice League (“Evil Odyssey”) (Urban Comics). On the program: the arrival of a new enemy and Green Arrow, spectacular battles, a kiss between Wonder Woman and Superman…
If you’re a Batman fan, the second volume of “La Cour des Hiboux” is a must, as is “Grant Morrison presents Batman – tome 1 – l’héritage maudit”, which introduces the son of the famous hero for the first time! (Urban Comics)
In a completely different genre, Soleil US Comics has the good idea of offering the 3rd volume of the complete “Judge Dredd”, the benchmark British comic-book (in black and white!). Action, black humor, but also a pertinent reflection on the evolution of our society (especially unemployment). Meanwhile, Volume 4 of Ninja Turtles is already available, and takes us back into the dark world of the original comic-book.
Delcourt has three events in store this spring. “Star Wars: la Génèse des Jedi – L’Eveil de la Force” reveals the origin of the Jedi Knights, some 36,453 years before Episode IV (by Ostrander and Duursema). Then, with “Assistant Executor”, a superb secretary, but also an assassin in financial circles. An Aspen 1OO% action comic-book. And last but not least, the 3rd volume of “Rising Stars” in early May, with its long-awaited revelations in VF… (hats off to Delcourt!).
Finally, the most surprising comic book of the moment is certainly “Du Plomb dans la Tête” (Casterman), which inspired Walter Hill’s film starring Sylvester Stallone (currently working on “Expendables 3”). French scriptwriter Matz and New Zealand illustrator Colin Wilson have created a world worthy of the darkest thrillers, with a cop and a killer forced to team up. A large-format reissue, for a gripping tale reminiscent of 100 Bullets for the boards and Brian Michael Bendis for the script. By the way, don’t miss the 18th and final volume of “100 Bullets” (Urban Comics). “The Grand Finale” is full of surprises…
