La Véritable Histoire de Maria Callas takes a fresh look at the illustrious singer at Théâtre Déjazet with Andréa Ferréol, Pierre Santini, Sophie Carrier, Lola Dewaere, Raymond Acquaviva and Cécile Pallas. This play of noise, screams, fury and music, written by Jean-Yves Rogale and directed by Raymond Acquaviva, is a dramatic comedy about the life and death of the most illustrious opera singer in history. From teenager to fashion-plate diva, Maria Callas proves that if heaven wanted her fat, she even beat heaven. But the heavens will never be kinder to her after this metamorphosis. The author introduces us to the “monsters” of modern mythology: Evangelia, Callas’s abusive mother; Battista Meneghini, her husband, who becomes her mentor and impresario, but forgets to bear her the child she so desires; and Aristotle Onassis, with whom she falls madly in love. But Callas soon discovers that Ulysses’ kingdom is dotted with yachts, private jets and a procession of lawless liaisons. And then there’s Jackie Kennedy, the widow, haloed and sanctified by tragedy, his rival. Aristotle Onassis could not resist and married her in 1968. This was Callas’s decline. She lost her voice and her life.
Meticulously staged and perfectly cast. A pleasant time is had by all. Not to be missed at Théâtre Déjazet.
