Literature in 2012 at the Lutetia is exciting and passionate!

Stephan Sweig accompanied on guitar, Hubert Haddad in the news, Umberto Eco for a live encounter, political conferences, literary prizes, surprising workshops for children, a charity event in aid of Care France: the salons of the Hôtel Lutetia will once again vibrate to the sounds of words throughout the first half of the year!

At the start of this new year, authors, novelists and poets are converging their inspiration on the grand hotel on the Left Bank – words, debates, initiatives for Children in Africa and new encounters for an imagination in perpetual stimulation!

Les Samedis Littéraires du Lutetia – for almost three years now, actors from the Association “Les Mots Parleurs” have been offering a monthly rendez-vous for lovers of reading and speaking: facing the audience, they appropriate a text and bring a story to life by reading it aloud. Each of these sessions is followed by a cocktail party, a privileged moment of convivial exchange – www.motsparleurs.com – dates and themes at the end of the document.

Rencontres-Débats in partnership with Le Magazine Littéraire in the presence of Joseph Macé-Scaron – since April 2011, and because the international scene is making a stop on Bd Raspail, Hôtel Lutetia and Le Magazine Littéraire have launched a series of encounters during which a foreign author debates his or her current situation – Bob Woodward, Russell Banks and David Grossman have already won over the Lutetia public during question-and-answer sessions punctuated by the talent of the famous journalist! – www.magazine-litteraire.com – On January 30, Umberto Eco will present the new version of his novel Le Nom de la Rose (Editions Grasset).

On Saturday February 4 and Sunday February 5, for the third year running, the Hôtel Lutetia will host the Rencontres des Mondes Juifs et Diasporas en dialogue. An evening and a day of dialogue between writers of diverse origins, around books on Jewish and diasporic themes. The meetings will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the public, and the guest authors will sign their works.

Saturday March 24 will be dedicated to helping children in Africa – as part of its sustainable development policy, the Concorde Hotels & Resorts Group has chosen to join forces with the non-governmental charitable organization CARE France, and has pledged to support projects on the theme of climate change and its impact on disadvantaged populations. These actions take the form of prevention (shelter construction), training (sustainable agriculture), repair and reconstruction, and emergency response.

In December 2010, the Hôtel Lutetia closed its Centenary year with a gala dinner, presided over by Arielle de Rothschild, President of CARE France, and sponsored by Juliette Greco. An auction was held to raise funds for relief efforts in Nicaragua.

In March, the Hôtel Lutetia will repeat its commitment to CARE, organizing a series of recreational workshops in its lounges for young and old alike, during which meetings, events and exchanges will take place on the theme of Africa (concert, presence of celebrities, meetings with authors, etc.). All proceeds from the event will be donated to the association’s activities – www.carefrance.org

On Thursday May 31, the Prix Françoise Sagan 2012 will be presented for the second year running in the salons of the Lutetia, in the presence of Denis Westhoff, the author’s son, and the members of the Jury (www.domaine-sagan.fr). The prize is awarded for a work of fiction, and recognizes the best novel of the spring. It is awarded to a young author who has not yet won a major literary prize or award during the year.

Children’s literary Saturdays – depending on the literary news for young readers, the hotel offers authors of children’s books and, independently of the meetings for older readers, reading sessions followed by interactive workshops in tune with the world of their narration – making travel diaries, making volume globes, workshops on visualizing emotions, origami creations, etc. Each workshop is followed by a snack prepared by our Pastry Chef, Guillaume Pochon.

Strong, moving and funny events: it’s happening on the Left Bank, and it’s happening at the Lutetia!
