Barbados on UNESCO’s World Heritage List

This summer, Barbados’ rich heritage was hailed as one of the world’s most famous cultural sites: UNESCO has just inscribed the historic center and former garrison of the capital, Bridgetown, on the World Heritage List.

The inscription was made official on June 29 by the World Heritage Committee at its 35th session in Paris, attended by Stephen Lashley, Barbados’ Minister of Culture, who came to support his country’s candidacy.

Bridgetown’s historic center and garrison were included on this prestigious list because they are perfectly preserved remnants of British colonial architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, bearing witness to the extent of the British Empire in this region.

Bridgetown and its Garrison are now ranked among the world’s most famous historic sites: the Cairo Pyramids, the Statue of Liberty and the Great Wall of China.
