Aganovich’s magnificent scenography invites us to a show that is at once poetic, strange and violent.
White pieces of silk or cotton twill form the basis of this collection of dresses, blouses and skirts. Pieces of black damask are grafted onto this whiteness. The silhouettes are made and unmade in a surgical manner, each element almost organic, blending with others to form a whole. A jigsaw puzzle of pieces worked in the manner of a visual artist seeking to sublimate a modern body freed from its physical limitations.
Then comes the print, a print of wilted poppies photographed by Irving Penn, a sublime and strange print. On the white silk, details from the “poppy” series (1967-1970), reworked with a graphic palette, are reminiscent of oil stains and blood splatters. This color, which for the first time disturbs the Aganovich collections, is the key element in this initiatory voyage to the frontier of poetry, frenzy and painting.
Discreetly embroidered narrative phrases from the collection are hidden here and there, embroidered by artist Adriana Paice, with whom Aganovich is beginning a collaboration.
