Milan Design Week, held from April 18 to 23, saw the presentation of the latest collaborative project from the A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE line with Nature Architects, called THINKING DESIGN, MAKING DESIGN: TYPE-Ⅴ Nature Architects project.
The project explores the role of design in structure, materiality and production, and aims to demonstrate how these pillars can form an all-in-one manufacturing process. The project examined the potential and possible innovations of A Piece of Cloth by integrating Nature Architects’ latest design solutions with ISSEY MIYAKE’s A-POC ABLE design and manufacturing system.
Nature Architects is a design company that develops unique function-driven design algorithms called DFM (Direct Functional Modeling™) based on metamaterials. By adapting Nature Architects’ DFM-derived framework to A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s original “Steam Stretch” technology, this project streamlined the design process by using a variety of more complex pleating techniques that could not previously be realized.
The prototypes developed as part of this project go beyond the manufacture of garments and offer prospects in the fields of furniture, lighting and architecture. One of the most remarkable prototypes is a jacket that requires a minimum of seams, transforming a flat fabric into a three-dimensional shape using high-temperature steam.
The project offers a glimpse into the aspirations of A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and Nature Architects for the future. Using the latest technological innovations, this project demonstrates the possibility of creating revolutionary designs while minimizing human operations and optimizing design and manufacturing processes. The prototypes presented are a true example of innovation and creativity in the fashion and design industry.
