In 1976, Gérald Genta designed the Ingenieur SL, reference 1832, for IWC Schaffhausen: a steel bracelet fully integrated into the case, conceived as an uninterrupted form all the way to the clasp. Steel was not yet accepted as a fine-watchmaking material; Genta’s gesture was precisely to establish it as one. Fifty years later, IWC presents two anniversary editions, references IW328910 and IW324909, with brushed dials directly inspired by that 1970s version. The announcement is paired with a video interview with Evelyne and Alexia Genta, the designer’s wife and daughter and co-founders of the Gérald Genta Heritage Association.
The timing is deliberate. Since the collection’s relaunch at Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2023 — when IWC showed the two women prototypes of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 before their public unveiling — the line has expanded, adding a tourbillon in 2026 for the first time in the Ingenieur’s history. That same year, the Maison chooses to foreground the family’s approval. The question raised by this timing is not whether the design is legitimate: the two new watches reproduce a documented dial, and the formal continuity of case, integrated bracelet and clasp can be checked across models. The question is exactly what that approval covers.
“The Ingenieur began as a technical watch, but it was transformed by an artist’s eye,” Evelyne Genta says in IWC’s press release. She adds that her husband “would be incredibly happy to see the respect with which IWC has preserved the DNA of his original design.” This is an official position expressed in an interview commissioned by the Maison, not an interview conducted by Luxsure, and should be read as such. What it attests, with the authority of someone close to Genta, is fidelity to a formal language: the case as a single sculptural object, steel elevated to a noble material, and the integration of bracelet and case as an aesthetic gesture rather than a mere technical constraint. Nothing in the release suggests that the family commented on adding a tourbillon to the collection. That decision follows a different logic — the conventional watchmaking use of complication as a sign of prestige, rather than the more distinctive idea of a unified design.
Franziska Gsell, chief marketing officer of IWC Schaffhausen, herself narrows the focus to people rather than the range: having the contemporary Ingenieur collection embraced by the two people who knew Gérald Genta best — as a husband and a father — is “extremely gratifying,” she says, again according to the release. The wording is careful: it speaks of the collection being embraced by relatives, not of technical approval for every extension of the calibre. That distinction deserves to be preserved as watchmaking houses increasingly turn to heritage associations and rights holders to authenticate relaunches — a practice that genuinely serves memory, but should not be read as blanket permission for every later product decision.
Ultimately, the anniversary reveals less nostalgia than a way of managing a transition: a design created against the luxury codes of its time, taken up fifty years later by an industry that still thinks in terms of complications. Steel has attained noble status; the question is whether Genta’s argument — one object, one form, without escalation — will survive a tourbillon as well as it survived an integrated bracelet.
