Isabel Benenato presented her latest Autumn-Winter 2016-2017 menswear collection on the bangs of the Paris Fashion Week shows. Called “Darkwood” in reference to nature (Isabel Benenato lives near a forest), the collection was inspired by the photographs of Yokohama Shashin. The entire collection was made in Italy.

For this collection, Isabel Benenato wanted to evoke the world of handmade clothing worn by Japanese farmers from the 1960s to the early 20th century. Her collection advocates a return to basics, all in simplicity. The geometric shapes of the garments give them a pared-down, shepherd-chic style in keeping with Japanese minimalism.

The collection’s star pieces are long knitted cardigans in luxurious materials: wool is interspersed with yak, alpaca or linen yarns. This patchwork of materials creates a contrast that contrasts with the tone-on-tone of the outfit. We also find shirts with an officer’s collar, plain on one side and striped on the other. Pants are short, wide and flowing, a little like culottes. They are held up by thin straps, as if the ensemble were overalls. The ensemble is light. All materials are layered to act as a barrier against the cold. Leather is used as armor, in the form of jackets and bags. Colors range from the traditional trio of black, gray and khaki to dark green, white and red.

With this new collection, Isabel Benenato presents us with a modern-day samurai of understated luxury and charm.
