A time warp.
What’s new, what’s “original”, what’s “new” in back-to-school 2015 trends? What were you wearing in 2005?
No, fashion isn’t just a case of eternal repetition. Yes, inventiveness and research are always the watchwords of this artistic universe. Repeating elements doesn’t mean we’re going in circles. This article goes against that idea. Reworking peacoats and the folk look is never done in the same way (as seen again at Isabel Marrant or Sonia Rykiel). It’s always revisited, and therefore new. As a form of homage, or as a critique of what’s already been seen.
A suit never means the same thing. Its meaning is determined by the accessories it is worn with, the designer who created it, and the era to which it belongs. Redesigning shoulder pads, which are associated with the 80s in 2015, is in no way sterile or backward-looking….
This is a cry to say: no, fashion hasn’t lost its way, and isn’t dying in repetition, resting in the re-editions of its past successes.
The present is built on knowledge of the past, and the future is founded on an awareness of what has been. The past – old pieces like the sailor suit – are constantly evoked, to the point where the past is undeniably part of our everyday practices.
5 Looks from 2005 to review? How nostalgic can you get for 2005?
2005 wasn’t all low-rise jeans and “bling bling” dresses. I promise, there was some good stuff.
Yes, yes …
Well, almost…5 trends that still work, before fashion week, which is currently underway, turns everything upside down.
-The officer look
We’re keeping the jacket-and-trousers ensemble. Natural class. Always effective, trends inspired by the “officer” wardrobe always give a sophisticated allure. Beware: the naval officer’s pea coat is already being hailed by the “street” and major fashion magazines as this fall’s star piece.
-Long skirts.
The folklore spirit of 2005 has mutated. Gone are the bright colors and gypsy looks. Long but monochromatic skirts in leather or seventies pleats, as at Gucci. The length and romantic inspiration remain, but in more natural tones: white, brown – with lace.
-Shimmering cosmic dresses.
We’re sticking with silver and glitter. Timeless and always effective. Disco effect authorized: add stars to shine on the dancefloor.
-Seventies velvet and suede.
It seems that Louis Vuitton has set the tone: the materials of the 70s are back. Modernized, suede is available in trapeze dresses, dresses with lace-up necklines, straight pants and casuals. The must: accessorize with flared 3/4 jeans, which many bloggers and editors are using to create their “street style” this catwalk season.
-Accessories: from ties to fine scarves. Hide your neck!
If you’re not too keen on the turtle neck, a fine scarf will help you accessorize your outfits. The scarf is thinner than in 2005, and less folkloric.
2005 was a good year. A year that saw the entry of “Rock” trends: perfecto and skinny jeans. From Kate Moss to Sienna Miller.
An over-read quote, no doubt, but one that says it all: “Fashions come and go, style remains” Yves Saint Laurent.
