Gratianne Bascans launches its first collection of designs for men and women in France and around the world. Gratianne and Amandine Bascans decided to revive a brand and create unique designs inspired by the origins and traditions of the family business, which has been in existence since 1830. The story of the Bascans family began in the Basque region, in Mauléon, and continued a few years later in Oloron Sainte Marie. For almost two centuries, the Bascans family has been a line of designers. From the first espadrilles by the young Alexis Bascans in 1830 to the haute couture accessories of Gratianne and Amandine, Bascans creations are treasures of luxury leather goods: handbags, travel bags, wallets, belts… The two designers, now based in Paris, carry on the family tradition, adding a certain Parisian chic, without forgetting their Basquo-Béarn roots. Their designs feature noble materials and authentic craftsmanship: French and European calf and bull calf leathers and metal parts in gilded brass, gold-plated silver or palladium, representing Pala and exceptional finishes. A single bag can take from four hours to several days to complete.

The red and silver “Bayadère” fabric is woven using the same process as when Tissages Lartigue was founded in 1910, and is now run by Gratianne’s first cousin Philippe. Weaving is carried out in the workshops located in Ascain, near Saint- Jean-de-Luz, in the Basque Country. The red and silver Bayadère cotton canvas, in the colors of the family coat of arms, is the emblematic sign of Gratianne Bascans creations. The “Bascanaise” cotton and linen canvas is of unique quality. It is supple, strong and waterproof. It is printed using ancestral methods by a French company awarded the prestigious “Entreprise du patrimoine vivant” label. Printing the “Bascanaise” requires three successive passes of different colors, using the Lyonnaise printing process. This technique consists of passing stencils one after the other over the fabric laid out on long heating tables. Each shade must be dry before the next pass. Finishing is done by hand with a brush. The low speed of this method guarantees exceptional ink thickness and long-lasting quality. The five motifs on the canvas belong to the symbolism of the Basque Country, based on ancestral practices that predate Christianity. The Basque cross, composed of four helical commas, symbolizes the struggle between light and darkness, the four elements of Creation: water, earth, fire and air, and the four seasons. The five-pointed star represents knowledge. Quality remains the watchword for Gratianne Bascans products, with the finest craftsmen using the finest materials. It takes four to eight hours to make a leather bag, and several days to manufacture a special order in shagreen or crocodile.

The leathers we select come from French or European calves and bulls chosen for their impeccable appearance and inimitable grain. Metal parts are either in gold- or silver-plated brass, or in gold- or palladium-plated brass. The GB pull tabs, in gold- or palladium-plated brass, represent the shape of a Pala racket (traditional Basque game). Gratianne Bascans goes to great lengths to give each handbag a unique passport, making it an exclusive model and guaranteeing the quality of a numbered product produced in limited quantities.

The women’s collection is composed of 3 handbag models:
the Miss Bascans bag, small and large, and the Socoa bag. Gratianne Bascans also offers two large travel bags. The small leather goods range includes two wallets, a checkbook holder and a belt model.
The Miss Bascans, large or small, is a must-have of timeless elegance. Silver-plated brass metal parts. Two interior leather pockets, one for the telephone. Round handles for carrying hands or arms.
The Socoa is a chic and noble model from the brand. It can be worn all year round for busy city days or as a shopping bag.

For the men’s collection, the brand has created a business bag, the Chistera, and two travel bags:
the Biarritz in canvas or leather. Gratianne Bascans also offers two wallets: the Luzien, available in small and large models, and the Chistera, with its shape reminiscent of the mountains of the Basque country, embodies the discreet luxury of the active, refined man. Its double topstitching in contrasting thread and its interior lined with bayadère fabric bring originality and incomparable class to the wearer.
The Biarritz, synonymous with luxury travel, is a Gratianne Basacans brand standard. Available in full-grain Taurillon Lagun leather, it features a removable shoulder strap and two interior leather pockets, one of which is zipped.
