The hospitality and lifestyle brand, known for dispensing silence and space as others dispense luxury, has announced Aman Seoul in Cheongdam, one of the South Korean capital’s most sought-after neighbourhoods, overlooking the Han River in the heart of Gangnam.
The choice of location is far from neutral. For two decades, Gangnam has concentrated much of Seoul’s economic and creative energy, from corporate headquarters and galleries to nightlife. Aman sees an opportunity to test its familiar vocabulary — intimacy, slowness and the feeling of sanctuary — in a setting better known for speed and urban density.
Conceived as a fully integrated destination, Aman Seoul will combine a hotel, a collection of branded residences and an Aman Club, according to the statement supplied by the brand. This three-part structure follows a formula the group has already tried elsewhere in the world, bringing hospitality together with residential offerings for guests who wish to extend the experience of a short stay over the longer term.
In design terms, the property has been imagined as a promontory above the city: an elevated space seeking to preserve the privacy and tranquillity associated with Aman while remaining connected to the energy, culture and creativity of contemporary Seoul. That is the balancing act at the heart of the opening — staying true to an identity forged away from major cities, often in secluded or historic places, while taking root in the lively centre of an Asian capital experiencing rapid growth in tourism and business.
Aman’s arrival in Seoul also belongs to a quiet but real contest among major international hotel names to establish themselves in a city that, propelled by the Korean cultural wave, has become a leading destination for travellers seeking experiences as exclusive as they are rare. Whether a philosophy of sanctuary born among Balinese rice fields and Himalayan valleys can reinvent itself amid Gangnam’s urban intensity remains to be seen.
