Four global golf stars – Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Foller – to take part in the 2016 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship
Created in 2006, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship annually brings together some of the world’s greatest golfers on the Abu Dhabi Golf Club course. Recognized as a major event on the European Tour, the Abu Dhabi Championship is the first of three “desert swing” tournaments, followed by the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and the Omega Dubai Desert.
To kick off its second decade of existence, this year’s championship will bring together a fine array of players, many of them among the discipline’s new elite, from January 21 to 24. Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson will all be in Abu Dhabi at the end of January in their bid to win the emblematic Falcon Trophy and a prize worth 2.5 million euros, the highest in the desert swing. Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, number 33 in the world rankings, will also be taking part.
Initially created to develop the emirate’s appeal as a golfing destination, the event grows in popularity every year: over 65,000 fans attended the 10th anniversary of the championship last year during the 2015 edition. The Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), which organizes the tournament, believes that the participation of young golf stars will help to attract an even larger and more varied audience this year.
HSBC will once again lend its support as official sponsor of the championship. The international bank has confirmed that it will continue to sponsor the championship for at least another five years, until 2020. H.H. Aref Al Awani, Secretary General of the ADSC, reaffirmed his commitment to making the championship an increasingly high-quality event, thanks in particular to the support of HSBC.
Visitors staying at any hotel in Abu Dhabi during the Championship period will benefit from free admission. 1-day and 4-day passes are also available for sale on the official website:www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com
