Costa Navarino, a prime destination committed to sustainable tourism, located in the Messinian region of Greece in the south-western Peloponnese, is hosting the “Navarino Challenge” sports competition from September 11 to 13.
Sports enthusiasts of all levels and families can take part in activities such as swimming, running, cycling, Pilates and Tae Kwon Do.
Famed ultramarathon runner Dean Karnazes has been the Navarino Challenge Ambassador for the past three years. He was named one of Time magazine’s 100 “Most Influential People in the World”. Dean Karnazes declares that the Navarino Challenge “is one of his favorite of the nearly one hundred sporting events he takes part in each year. One of my fondest memories of last year was when the spectators and athletes started doing Greek dances at the finish of the race.” He will be joined by Spyros Gianniotis, Olympic medal-winning swimmer and double world championship silver medallist, Alexandros Nikolaidis, double Olympic silver medallist in Tae Kwon Do, Pilates instructor Mandy Persaki and kick boxing champion Alexandros Nikolaidis. Navarino Challenge will also have the honor of receiving a visit from Periklis Iakovakis, Greek Olympic Champion and most awarded athlete. This year, the introduction of climbing as a new sporting discipline is a highlight, with the contribution of qualified instructor George Malamas.
The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the fight against childhood overweight, and to promote the Messenian diet and the importance of physical exercise.
On September 10, George Malamas will mark out the new climbing courses on the islet of Sfaktiria, which will open for the 2016 season at Costa Navarino. During the weekend, workshops will be held on the 100m2 climbing wall, which offers courses for all levels.
On September 12, participants in the Navarino Challenge will swim 1.6km in the crystal-clear waters of Navarin Bay, close to the charming village of Pylos. An 800-meter course will be available for children.
On September 13, the running events kick off with the half-marathon, 10kms, 5kms and 1km for children. All events start and finish at the Navarino Dunes site in Costa Navarino. Runners will cover the streets of the town of Pylos and the paths to Voidokilia beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
All those taking part in the extensive Navarino Challenge program can take advantage of a special rate to stay at The Westin Resort Costa Navarino at 199€ per night in a double room. Further information from the organizers, The Travel Company Experts – http://www.navarinochallenge.com/
