SERGE LUTENS – THE DEVIL’S BED

La Couche du Diable

In this fragrance, Monsieur Lutens gives his own interpretation of the Oud.

“Of the infamous, he dons the livery: a long black cape open to the red of tights sheathing body and skull. A figure emerges from the cut-out hood. Rising from the root of the nose to the top of the temples, an oblique eyebrow scowls at the portrait of Satan. No more than a skull and crossbones frightens us today, this old-fashioned image from the depths of time embodies a taste for sin. Who benefits from crime, the self-confessed criminal? But how could the innocent declare himself guilty? And yet…

When the vase on the mantelpiece fell, the muffled sound of glass on carpet drew the mother to her feet. The child was still holding the doily, responsible for the fall. Like an offering to the gods, she raised the object flat on both hands. In a monologue that never seemed to end, she repeated:

– It’s not possible, it’s not possible!

Her voice was muffled. Did she even know she was speaking? Perhaps she was addressing the crack in her life.

– This can’t be…

But it was only a vase. Never before in memory had a flower opened in the water of a vase.

– Look what you’ve done!

With her eyes, she stared at the fingers pinching the doily’s scalloped edge. When you’re four or five years old, you give everything a soul.

– And what’s this?” she says, as she notices the lace.
– From above the fireplace she drooled. It’s not me, it’s my hand. It’s the vase – that fell…

She remained silent, but this intimate reproach did not leave the child. It turned into remorse. This is the devil’s bed. He sleeps on embers.”
