COMICS SELECTION

Thanks to film adaptations, superheroes are now the talk of the town.
If you’re a fan, or just want to get back to basics, here’s a selection of the best comics of the moment, starring “Daredevil”, an unusual hero. Blind, he defends the downtrodden in New York as both lawyer and superhero. His destiny, however, has always been punctuated by tragedy. The latest was his descent into hell as head of the Hand, a criminal organization he believed he could change from within. Manipulated, he was saved in extremis by his superhero friends and is now trying to pick up the pieces in a small desert town. The 4-part “Reborn” saga, published in the “100% Marvel” collection (Marvel France), retraces his inner struggle to restore meaning to his life, as well as his fight against dirty cops and drug dealers. A convincing, yet very dark and uncompromising tale, orchestrated by scriptwriter Andy Diggle and artist Davide Gianfelice.
The other event is the publication by Delcourt of the complete “Rising Stars” series. For the first time, we’ll finally be able to discover in France the final issues of this memorable saga (the unpublished ones will be in the 3rd and final volume) created in 2000.
From now on, the first volume will introduce you to 113 children, born in 1969 in the USA, endowed with superpowers following the crash of a fireball in their town. A phenomenon which doesn’t always make their integration into society any easier, and which attracts the attention of the authorities.
What’s more, when they become adults, their ranks are mysteriously decimated by one of them…
This exciting saga is a must for comic book fans. Action, suspense, emotion, political reflection, character psychology…the work of screenwriter J.M Straczynski (known as the creator of “Babylon 5”) is impeccable. Since then, he has worked for Marvel and DC, taking the destiny of Spider-man and Superman into his own hands.

On the DVD side, don’t miss “Captain America: First Avenger” (Paramount), which reveals how a frail, shy young man became a superhero in 1941. Action, science fiction, humor and superb direction are all on the agenda in this adaptation of a famous Marvel comic-book. Bonus: a top-notch cast, led by Tommy Lee Jones.
Finally, if you’re a rock fan, the event is the release of the new “Van Halen” album, featuring the incredible return of David Lee Roth!
” A Different Kind of Truth” (Interscope) features 13 memorable tracks, but for comic fans, there’s also the release of a comic-book retracing the band’s history. “Strange and Twisted Tales” is written by Lance Watts and illustrated by Garth Jones (available on the band’s official website).
