The Autumn/Winter 2013/2014 Mareunrols presentation was a strange one. Far from the usual context of a fashion show or even a regular presentation, the Mareunrols presentation is conceptual, as are some of the garments in the collection. The Latvian brand has a flair for staging when it comes to both the original context and the creations (it’s not for nothing that the duo behind Mareunrols were the big winners of the 2009 Hyères Festival).
Even though the presentation takes place during men’s fashion week, it’s the woman and the man who are shown to us. The collection is inspired by nature, and landscape imagery is strong throughout. So, what might appear to be an arbitrary choice of colors is in fact a bias and a tribute to the surreal landscapes to be found.
The collection is dark and cold, with gray and black reigning supreme, but beautiful colors such as water green, lilac and metallic hues lift the collection’s initially serious mood.
Knits, lengths, layering: this is the recipe chosen by designers Marite Mastina and Rolands Peterkops. It’s a recipe that works, creating versatile silhouettes, with each layer expressing a different desire or inclination. Volumes are contrasted with more tailored pieces, and shapes with a mix of materials.
In addition to the 3D conceptual glasses, Mareunrols’ work is above all based on interesting research.
