Drunk Lovers Extrait Extrême: when a cult fragrance gives in to excess

Some fragrances are content to last. Drunk Lovers chose to intensify, until it became something its own house describes as a glass that should never have been drunk.

The success of a niche fragrance always raises the same question for the house that created it: should it be left to live as it is, at the risk of running out of breath, or pushed further, at the risk of betraying what made its identity? With Drunk Lovers Extrait Extrême, a reinterpretation signed by perfumer Jordi Fernandez, Borntostandout has chosen the second option. It is conceived not as a minor variation but as a more intense, darker and more addictive version of the iconic fragrance that preceded it.

The olfactory construction embraces this logic of intensification right down to its architecture. The top notes immediately establish a boozy, assertive depth, between red wine, wine lees, bergamot and clary sage. The heart, in turn, reveals an incandescent accord of brandy, red ginger, davana, jasmine sambac and Peru balsam, before a base of roasted tonka bean, Akigala wood, cistus, leather and oud settles in a smoky, woody and intensely carnal trail.

This pyramid, resolutely oriented towards the boozy oriental family, reflects a narrative ambition acknowledged by the house: to capture, in fragrance, the precise moment when an evening tips over, between desire, excess and abandon. The reference to wine, present from the top to the base of the composition, is no coincidence: it places the fragrance in an almost literary register, that of intoxication as a metaphor for love pushed to its breaking point.

Offered as an extrait at fifty percent concentration, Drunk Lovers Extrait Extrême comes in two sizes, fifteen and fifty millilitres, clearly positioning the fragrance in the premium segment of niche perfumery. This choice of concentration is not neutral: it ensures a longevity and olfactory density equal to the story the house wants to tell, far from the diluted eaux de toilette that dominate the mass market.

By building on the success of a first opus rather than seeking to replace it, Borntostandout illustrates a strategy increasingly common in independent perfumery: rather than multiplying new releases at the risk of diluting its identity, the house chooses to deepen an olfactory territory already identified by its enthusiasts, pushing it a little further each time in intensity and radicalism.
