Apple presents the most powerful and versatile iPad Air to date

The new iPad Air features the revolutionary M1 chip, ultra-fast 5G, a new front camera with centered frame and more

Apple has announced the new iPad Air featuring Apple’s signature M1 chip for a dramatic increase in performance. Available in a new range of colors, the iPad Air also features the new ultra-wide-angle front camera with Centered Frame for more natural video conferencing, a USB-C port with twice the transfer speeds, and blazing 5G connectivity on cellular models, all at an affordable price. Sophisticated cameras and compatibility with next-generation accessories enable users, including content creators, gamers and students, to push their limits in terms of creativity, productivity and personal expression. The new iPad Air can be ordered from Friday, March 11, and will be available from the Apple Retail Store from Friday, March 18.

“Incredibly powerful and versatile, very easy to carry, the iPad Air is for everyone and will accompany students taking detailed notes for their classes, artists working on their next content as well as video game enthusiasts wanting to enjoy spectacular graphics,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “With its revolutionary M1 chip, ultra-wide-angle front camera with Centered Frame and ultra-fast 5G connectivity, the iPad Air is more powerful, more capable and simply more fun to use than ever.”

The M1 chip gives iPad Air an exceptional performance boost

The revolutionary M1 chip integrated into iPad Air offers enhanced performance to handle the most demanding apps and workloads, while limiting energy consumption and maintaining a day’s autonomy1. Its 8-core CPU boosts performance by up to 60%, and its 8-core GPU delivers 2 times the graphics performance of the previous model. Driven by the power of the CPU and GPU, the 16-core Neural Engine deploys advanced machine learning functions to bring never-before-seen experiences to life. Thanks to the exceptional performance of the M1 chip, the iPad Air allows you to edit multiple 4K video streams, enjoy video games with spectacular graphics, redesign a room in 3D or make the most of augmented reality.

12 MP ultra-wide-angle front camera with centered frame

The ultra-wide-angle 12 MP front camera with Center Frame automatically keeps the subject in frame as it moves. When the subject is joined by other people, the lens detects them and zooms out to include them in the conversation. Whether you’re making calls to friends and family or taking part in an online training course, the Focused Frame function makes for more dynamic exchanges than ever before. With the addition of Center Frame on the iPad Air, all iPad models now offer this exceptional experience2.

The 12 MP wide-angle rear camera lets you take crystal-clear 4K photos and videos, scan documents and enjoy unforgettable augmented reality experiences. An end-to-end solution for recording, editing and sharing photos and videos, the iPad Air is an ultra-portable, incredibly versatile mobile studio.

Advanced connectivity and ultra-fast 5G

With its faster wireless connectivity, the iPad Air makes it possible to be even more productive on the move. Thanks to its 5G connectivity, the iPad Air can reach 3.5 Gbit/s in ideal conditions3. Compatible with eSIM and Wi-Fi 6, the iPad Air offers great connection flexibility, whether you’re accessing files, backing up data, communicating with colleagues or watching a movie with family and friends with SharePlay.

The USB-C port is now twice as fast as the previous generation, with data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s for importing large photos and videos even faster. The port connects the iPad Air to a vast ecosystem of accessories, such as cameras, external storage devices and 6K monitors.

All-screen design with Liquid Retina display and Touch ID

Particularly appreciated for its slim, lightweight design, the new iPad Air comes in a magnificent range of colors: sidereal gray, starlight, pink, mauve and an elegant new shade of blue. With its 3.8 million pixels and advanced technologies, including 500 nits brightness, full lamination, wide P3 color gamut, True Tone and anti-reflective coating, the iPad Air’s 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display offers immersive, striking visual experiences.

Combined with the Liquid Retina display, the iPad Air’s landscape-mode stereo speakers deliver ample stereo sound ideal for watching movies or series. Now integrated directly into the iPad Air’s top button, Touch ID continues to offer a simple, secure way to authenticate to unlock the iPad Air, connect to apps or use Apple Pay.

The accessories

The Apple Pencil (2ᵉ generation) turns the iPad Air into a digital diary or sketchbook to take with you wherever you go. Thanks to wireless charging and pairing, the Apple Pencil boasts pixel-perfect precision and virtually imperceptible latency, making writing as easy and natural as on paper.

The new iPad Air is compatible with the Magic Keyboard, whose suspended design and integrated trackpad offer unrivalled typing comfort; the Smart Keyboard Folio, whose slim design offers a pleasant typing experience; and the Smart Folio, whose black, white, electric orange, black cherry, English lavender and navy blue colors match the new iPad Air finishes perfectly.

iPadOS 15 improves productivity and further enhances the versatility of the iPad Air

iPadOS 15 offers a unique experience designed to take full advantage of the iPad’s exceptional capabilities.

  • Multitasking is even more intuitive, with features like Split View and Slide Over easier to find, simpler to use and more powerful.
  • Notes are system-wide with Quick Note, and offer new ways of collaborating and organizing with keyboard input or writing with the Apple Pencil.
  • SharePlay lets you share unforgettable experiences with friends and family during FaceTime calls, while watching a film, listening to an album or taking part in a group sports training session, always in perfect synchronization.
  • The iPad further enhances its machine learning capabilities. Live Text exploits on-board intelligence to recognize and act on text within a photo. A photo of a store window, for example, can contain a telephone number, with the option of calling that number4.
  • With the launch of iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 next week, Universal Command will enable simultaneous work on Mac and iPad with a single mouse and keyboard, for unrivalled fluidity between devices without any prior configuration. This feature even offers the ability to drag and drop content from one device to another, which is ideal for sketching a drawing with the Apple Pencil on the iPad and then adding it to a Keynote slide on the Mac5.

The iPad Air and the environment

The iPad Air has a 100% recycled aluminum casing, the solder joints on its logic motherboard are made from 100% recycled tin, and the rare-earth elements used in the casing and magnets for the audio system are also 100% recycled. All iPad models comply with Apple’s stringent energy efficiency standards and are free from harmful substances, while the wood fibers in their packaging are recycled or come from responsibly managed forests.

Apple has achieved carbon neutrality for its global business operations, and is aiming for zero net climate impact by 2030 across its entire business, including its manufacturing supply chains and the lifecycle of all its products. This means that every Apple device sold, from component manufacture, assembly, transportation, use and recharging, to recycling and materials recovery, will be 100% carbon neutral.
