The first establishment of the Hong Kong-based The Peninsula Hotels group opened its doors to its first guests in the early afternoon, revealing the entrance to its majestic lobby, which until then had been closely guarded. With an intimate opening ceremony, including a Chinese-style lion dance, employees were on hand to witness the eagerly-awaited opening.(From left to right) Peter Borer, Executive Director, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited; Nicolas Béliard, General Manager, The Peninsula Paris; Hamad Abdulla Al Mulla, Chairman, CEO and Board Member, Katara Hospitality; HE Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani, Chairman, Katara Hospitality; Clément Kwok, Chairman and CEO of The Hongkong and Shanghai, Limited; Fleur Pellerin, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Tourism Promotion and the French Abroad; Claude Goasguen, Mayor of the 16th arrondissement of Paris; ribbon-cutting for the inauguration of The Peninsula Paris.
After more than four years of renovation, this building steeped in history has been restored to its former glory. Mr. Clément Kwok, Chairman and CEO of The Hongkong and Shanghai Limited, commented: “I am delighted and proud to present The Peninsula Paris, the latest addition to The Peninsula Hotels family, our tenth hotel and our first in Europe. It has taken us four years, together with our partner Katara Hospitality, to design and build this magnificent, contemporary, state-of-the-art establishment in this splendid historic building, which has been completely restored to its former glory. As a company, HSH is truly committed to the long term, and is focused on developing, as owner-operator, a small number of excellent Peninsula hotels in major international cities. After many years of searching for a suitable project in Europe, I am delighted that we are entering one of the world’s most incredible cities, Paris. “.
Nicolas Béliard, General Manager of The Peninsula Paris, added: “It is with great emotion that we welcome our first guests today. My team and I have been able to see the evolution of this project; from a lifeless building to a construction site, we have been working on the rebirth of this historic establishment. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and Fleur Pellerin, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Tourism Promotion and French Nationals Abroad, stressed the importance of these investments, which are a source of growth and job creation on the one hand, and a showcase for French know-how and heritage on the other. They also pointed out that the opening has created 530 full-time jobs, a figure that should rise to 600 by the end of the year. In addition, 3,000 workers, craftsmen and architects were involved in the restoration of this Parisian jewel. What’s more, the choice of France and Paris for the opening of The Peninsula Group’s first hotel in Europe highlights the city as a major tourist destination.
