2017 : CHANEL celebrates GABRIELLE

In 2017, CHANEL celebrates Gabrielle, the birth name of its creator, better known as Coco Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld is dedicating a bag to her, the GABRIELLE de CHANEL, which he created last October for the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. The House will also launch a fragrance named GABRIELLE CHANEL in autumn 2017.
The first name Gabrielle, the one that made her a conqueror who transforms her insubordination into creation, defines her above all others. Throughout 2017, it will inspire four films to be discovered on the Inside CHANEL website, revolving around insubordination, freedom, passion and allure, the values that governed Gabrielle Chanel’s life, and which remain an inspiration to all women today.

Chapter 18: Gabrielle or insubordination
« I chose what I wanted to be, and I am it. »
Choose, want, be. Three verbs that characterize Gabrielle the insubordinate, who threw herself into the destiny she had instinctively drawn for herself. Her audacity, her thirst for freedom, her irreverence, Gabrielle made them her source of inspiration, the cradle of her creation. Avant-garde to the depths of her soul, she invented a style and an allure, revolutionizing fashion before overturning the traditional codes of jewelry and perfume. For in every field, Gabrielle worked intuitively, rejecting dogma and established rules. Through her travels, her romantic encounters and the links she forged with the greatest artists of her time, Gabrielle also forged the character of Coco, the nickname given to her by her closest friends.

For both of them, nothing is too frightening, no obstacle too great. But it was she, Gabrielle, who initiated the attitude that led women to claim their freedom to be and to dare to choose their lives. It was she, Gabrielle, who became their role model and who, even today, remains an icon, an inspiration for all women.
With Gabrielle, women discovered a « luxury that doesn’t show », preferring the simplicity of a black dress, the comfort and elegance of a tweed jacket or suit. They cut their hair and can finally move, their gestures freed from the shackles of a bag, now slung over the shoulder along a chain. They gild in the sun, perfume themselves with N°5, a fragrance for « women with a woman’s scent ». They casually combine their diamonds with fancy pearls. They play, ride, ski, breathe and smile at life.

Choosing audacity, striving for beauty, being oneself: more than ever, Gabrielle is more than just a name: it’s an invitation to all women to realize their potential, to believe in who they are and to follow their own voice. More than Coco, the designer, it is Gabrielle, the woman, who is at the heart of the CHANEL story.
The film Gabrielle ou l’insoumission provides new insights into the Gabrielle Chanel woman and the creations that forged her legend.

The 18th episode of the Inside Chanel series invites us to revisit the previous short films, to read between their lines in the light of this new perspective. How was the famous little jacket born, what paradoxes gave birth to the CHANEL allure? What are the secrets behind Marilyn Monroe and her favorite perfume, N°5? But also, what was Chanel’s Paris, and how does Karl Lagerfeld see Gabrielle and CHANEL? Where do the House’s distinctive colors and vocabulary come from, or the inseparable symbols of the lion and camellia?

Pushing open the door of Inside Chanel is to understand more than just a story of fashion, perfume or haute joaillerie. It’s to go to the heart of the origins of the creation of the House of CHANEL, to discover a vision of anticipation that has become a timeless attitude, to plunge into the life of a rebellious woman who shattered the codes of her time and remains an inspiration to all women today.

Inside Chanel, it’s Gabrielle, the woman, and Coco, the designer. It’s one without the other…and a little more…

Here’s the first film in this tetralogy, Gabrielle ou l’insoumission.
