With Ultimune Power Infusing Oil, Shiseido brings this ritual into a more contemporary realm: that of a hybrid skincare product, designed for the face, body, hair, and scalp.

The product expands the Ultimune line, which at Shiseido is already associated with the concept of skin defense. The press kit highlights over 30 years of research into the skin’s immune system, but the interesting point is not so much the scientific claim as the shift in scale. The brand is no longer focusing solely on the face. It is bringing the body back into the equation.

This detail is less superficial than it seems. The body accounts for 97% of the skin’s surface area, yet it is often treated as an afterthought in skincare. Shiseido also cites an observation from a test conducted on 39 Japanese men aged 25 to 52: after exposing the back to UV rays, measurable effects on the skin barrier and hydration levels can appear on the face between 24 hours and seven days later. Here, body care becomes an indirect way of thinking about the face.

The formula features a water-based texture designed to provide the comfort of an oil without the greasy finish. At its core: a duo of camellia extracts. Power Fermented Camellia + is designed to help remove aged cells before new visible signs appear, while the fortified camellia seed extract aims to rebalance the skin’s internal defense mechanisms when it is under stress, particularly UV exposure and dryness. Hyaluronic acid and ectoine round out the formula, focusing on hydration and barrier function.

The fragrance also plays its part. Shiseido describes a green floral scent composed of lotus, rose, rosemary, cardamom, ginger, and matsurika. Consumer tests indicate that 97% of participants find the scent pleasant, 95% find the floral note relaxing, and 93% report feeling energized when they feel down or sluggish. While we may remain cautious about performance-driven rhetoric, we can still observe what it reveals: premium beauty is now centered on a holistic, measured, sensory—almost behavioral—approach to skincare. Shiseido no longer sells just a red oil in a dropper bottle. The brand offers a vision of skincare as continuity: skin, body, hair, mood, light. Within this continuity lies a broader evolution in luxury cosmetics: less promise of transformation, more intelligent maintenance.
