Serpenti, through the eyes of Nicholas Kirkwood

The SERPENTI FOREVER bags, icons of the house with their signature enamelled snakehead clasp, are reinterpreted by the discerning eye of Nicholas Kirkwood, a designer renowned worldwide for his bold creations in the field of women’s footwear.
This collaboration makes artistic sense because BVLGARI and Nicholas Kirkwood draw their inspiration from innovation, architecture and graphic forms. Both houses are bold, unconventional and deeply ambitious when it comes to creativity.
The result is a capsule collection that mesmerizes with its distinctive studded herringbone pattern. Sinuous zigzags cut through the precious leather, evoking the graphic scales and supple movements of the snake, a long-standing Bulgari icon.
For the SERPENTI BY NICHOLAS KIRKWOOD collection, the English designer’s creativity was marked by two key moments. The first was during his first visit to the jewelry workshop in Rome, where master craftsmen bring to life unique pieces that celebrate the beauty and power of each precious stone. The second moment was discovering the Bulgari “Serpenti Form” exhibition in Rome, a demonstration of how the snake has inspired a plethora of artists, sculptors, fashion designers, filmmakers and photographers past and present.
Nicholas Kirkwood’s interpretation comes in the form of a richly textured herringbone pattern, described by a mix of varnished studs sometimes in the form of flat, round buttons, sometimes drawing matte pyramids. Giving new impetus to the enamelled Snakehead clasp, with a more elegant and modern shape, the motif of this collaboration adorns backpacks and handbags, whether square or rectangular. The gemstone-inspired color palette of black and white, pink spinel, royal sapphire and gold underscores the collection’s captivating allure and three-dimensional feel.
Interpreted with a revolutionary hand, each bag reflects the key design codes shared by Bulgari and Nicholas Kirkwood – the blending of unexpected materials and colors to produce a powerful final effect.
“I created the chevron pattern using rubberized nails whose faces remind me of the spectacular diamond settings and stones I’ve seen in Bulgari’s Haute Joaillerie workshop in Rome.”
Nicholas Kirkwood
