Exhibitions events Matisse and Modigliani :
Philadelphia, a city where art comes to life

In October 2022, two flagship exhibitions, one dedicated to Matisse and the other to Modigliani, will premiere in America’s first city.

Art is an essential part of any visit to Philadelphia. Art is everywhere, extending far beyond the walls of the city’s famous museums, accompanying visitors into the streets, parks and open spaces. But this autumn, Philadelphia’s two best-known museums, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation, will shine especially brightly with two exhibition events.

Matisse in the 1930s at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

A visit to Philadelphia in 1930 inspired Henri Matisse to develop a new creative approach and perspective that he would emphasize in his work in the latter part of his career. The Philadelphia Museum of Art presents the first exhibition devoted to this pivotal decade in the artist’s career. A joint exhibition of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and the Musée Matisse in Nice,“Matisse in the 1930s” will be presented from October 19, 2022 to January 29, 2023 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art – the only museum in the United States to host this exhibition before its return across the Atlantic.

The exhibition will invite visitors to immerse themselves in Matisse’s work, with over 100 pieces on display, including renowned and rarely seen paintings and sculptures, drawings, engravings and illustrated books. The exhibition will then travel to the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, followed by the Musée Matisse in Nice.

In parallel, the Barnes Foundation, which houses a mural by Matisse in its main gallery, ” La Danse “, commissioned in 1930 by Dr. Albert C. Barnes himself, will also be exhibiting part of its archive, including some of the letters exchanged between Dr. Barnes and Matisse during the years-long project, as well as a selection of sketches and photographs, giving visitors a glimpse of the trials and tribulations that led to the triumph that is La Danse.

Modigliani Up Close at the Barnes Foundation

The Barnes Foundation celebrates its centenary in 2022 with the exhibition “Modigliani Up Close” , which explores Amedeo Modigliani’s working methods and materials. Building on research that began in 2017 with a major retrospective at Tate Modern, this focused project takes a close look at how Modigliani created his works. New studies by specialists across Europe and the Americas illuminate a detailed investigation of the artist’s unique style, shedding new light on his practice, in an exhibition that brings together important pieces from the collections of various museums.

The exhibition will run from October 16, 2022 to January 29, 2023. It is of particular importance to the Barnes Foundation, as Dr. Barnes was one of the first collectors of Modigliani in the United States and helped shape his critical reception there.
