It’s the Chemical Brothers’ title that gave its name to the French brand Surface To Air, a ready-to-wear brand for men and women, but not only that, it’s also a creative studio active in all other artistic fields, such as photography, music and directing. Taking on the artistic direction of projects for artists, ready-to-wear and haute couture houses, Louis Vuitton and Diesel have entrusted their image to the studio, as have the music groups Justice, Chromeo and Midnight Juggernauts. So it’s only natural that Surface to Air should announce a new collaborative project with Alison Mosshart, the iconic singer of The Kills, to be launched this month. A capsule collection featuring a supple leather jacket with studded stars and fringed sleeves, as well as a t-shirt with monochrome letters forming invented words and the inscription “Take a Bow” on the back. Alison Mosshart had long wanted to design her dream leather jacket, the one she looked for everywhere but never found: a biker jacket with bangs and 70s decadence. A jacket with sleeves that can be rolled up and a different color lining. In black leather, a beautiful cut, a jacket that’s part Elvis, part Hells Angles and part Evel Knievel.
Alison’s relationship with Surface to Air goes back a long way, to the early days of her band The Kills, who filmed scenes from their documentary “I Hate The Way You Love” in the basement of the Surface to Air boutique/studio/gallery in Paris. In September 2012, The Kills and Surface to Air met again to celebrate the launch of Kenneth Capello’s photo book “Dream and Drive” in the Paris flagship store.
As fashion and music once again reveal their intimate relationship, Surface to Air is more than a brand, it’s a veritable artistic collective.
