An old-fashioned soul-mate-finding vacation in Ireland

In these days of online dating, speed dating and exploding matrimonial shows, singles are not left behind. However, in a remote village on the Irish west coast, a traditional “matchmaking” festival still exists, where travelers from all over the world flock to the Matchmaker Bar in the village of Lisdoonvarna to find their soulmate using a two-hundred-year-old technique. Willie Daly, the last and only “matchmaker” of his rank, uses his gift to “couple” those who wish to be matched.

It all started with the quality of the water in the village. People have been coming to Lisdoonvarna since the 18th century to “take the water” and enjoy its health benefits. This popular meeting place has enabled many visitors to find a spouse, giving rise to the tradition of “matchmaking”, in which men and women meet to form couples.

With friends or on your own, you can attend the festival, which lasts all September, and spend a weekend or more in this typically Irish cottage, to stay in the traditional festival spirit. For €59 a night, this cottage can accommodate up to 6 people.

Again with a sea view and for a larger group, this house sleeps up to 8 people for €74 a night, and offers plenty of options for seaside strolls between two searches for a soulmate, or for romantic strolls if you end up finding one.

For lovers of old stones, this fully restored manor house can be rented for €95 a night for up to four people.
