Shuunt

Why Shuunt?

Last year, Agnès, the band’s keyboardist and backing vocalist, discovered an unlikely London venue called Shunt, which is located under the Thames in a former arcade, where you can watch dancing,

theater, music, exhibitions and, of course, food and drink! It’s a place that brings together all art forms, influences and subjects, with no limits. The mix of atmospheres, perfumes, sounds… That’s what’s so surreal about this place. Between the four of us, that’s kind of what we’re trying to express, the blending of influences to achieve a sound that’s ultimately completely identifiable.

That’s the poetic version…

Truth lies elsewhere… We searched for hours and hours for a name we liked. We even went to www.bandnamemaker.com, which randomly suggests word combinations! After crossing off all the names on the 4th list, Agnès came up with SHUUNT.

Afterwards, we checked on the internet that it didn’t mean “atrophy” or “eunuch”. The original meaning is “to short-circuit”. It corresponds to what we want to bring. And the two “U “s are a nod to the two “U “s in “eunuch”… And also a bit to annoy the world.

Who’s who, and who does what?

Agnès is the lady of the quartet. She plays the synths and provides backing vocals. She loves Fanny Ardant, Bill Evans and Basquiat.
Stan is the band’s clubber. He’s a drummer too. He sings…a bit. He likes bananas, Goa trance and purple.
Aurélien is the fashionisto. He plays lead guitar. He doesn’t sing very well yet, so he’s not singing for the time being. He likes buying and selling guitar pedals, the Lyon soccer team and his dog Titou.
Angelo is the group’s immigrant quota representative. He sings mainly and plays guitar quite a bit too. He loves Apple, FIFA and espadrilles.

How did you meet?

We met through friends and the Internet. Angelo had posted ads looking for musicians. With time and experience, we became the 4 fingers of one hand.
In fact, finding friends on the Internet is something we invented. We invented Facebook.

If Shuunt were a drug?

Each member of the group is a drug in his own right.
Angelo is coke. He’s fast, works like crazy and never gets tired.
Stan, it’s MD. He’s happy.
Aurélien is aspirin. He’s always afraid of getting sick.
Agnès is all about weed. She’s a Bob Marley fan.

A movie?

A cross between Eyes Wide Shut for the sexual tension, Bill Elliott for the kid’s dream, and the Fantastic 4 for everyone’s specific powers.

A city?

London, of course. Because Brive la Gaillarde is less sexy.

Your EP in two words?

Extended Play. Free download at www.shuunt.com

What is rock?

A sip of Coke with a Mentos in your mouth.

Best concert memory?

The Reservoir concert. Aurel with a straw in his mouth, Stan shirtless, Agnès in leggings, and Angelo sweating Redbull. The live show on ARTE is also memorable. Biggest flip yet.

The worst part?

The very first concert together at the Boule Noire. Agnès and Stan had just joined the band, learning the songs, and nobody was comfortable. It was a crazy crowd, but the sound was horrible, so it was a great moment of solitude.
It started off really badly, in fact.
Now it’s a blast!

ANORAAK

Why this name?

Because he’s cool. No?

Best club memory?

I’d say New York, Webster Hall, because it was the first time I’d set foot on the American continent, it was to play my music there, and it was packed.

The worst part?

The time I smashed my leg on a return as I left the stage, followed by a fall of the most beautiful effect, and unbearable pain. That’s done.

The craziest thing you’ve done during a set?

Smashing my leg on a return.

An album?

Come down with me, by ERRORS

A drug?

Dunhill or Craven, depending on the weather.

Your LP in two words?

Feel good

Pony Pony Run Run?

Lots of sawdust

Ten years from now?

Non-smoker… maybe

Tomorrow?

repeat.
