Paul’s experiences there, past and present, were the inspiration for this collection. In 1966, the first Notting Hill Carnival took place, and at the same time, suits were modernized with lighter cuts and airier Italian wools. Other inspirations include sportswear and the warm colors of the Caribbean, reflecting the multicultural reality of London in 2016.
For its spring/summer 2017 collection Paul Smith wants to promote a message of peace and optimism.
The long-awaited parade took place at the Paris Bourse du Commerce, to the sound of reggae music.
Paul’s first trip was to London as a teenager in the ’60s, living in Nottingham. He lived in a friend’s apartment on Notting Hill and went exploring the city. Since then, he has called West London his “home”.

He marks his collection with the number 17, the date of the fashion show, in the hope that 2017 will be a brighter, happier and calmer year than the one before.
