Sir John Gay began the world’s first known rum distillation in 1703. Taking over a distillery in St Lucy, on the island of Barbados, he gradually developed and perfected a distillation process still in use today.
A PLACE
As the island of origin of rum, Barbados benefits from all the essential elements needed to produce an exceptional rum:
– Exceptionally pure water, thanks to its coral origins
– Rich, aromatic sugar cane
– A climate conducive to unique, high-quality fermentation.
A SIGNATURE
The subtle blending of single distillates (in columns) and double distillates
(in stills) and maturation in Bourbon oak barrels give Mount Gay rums
their unmistakable stamp: a unique aromatic character and a smooth
finish.
A guardian of tradition, Allen Smith, the current Cellar Master, perpetuates all the traditional gestures to turn craftsmanship into a true art.
The range
XO
An opulent blend of Mount Gay’s finest eaux de vies, aged from 8 to 15 years. It exudes the finesse that only time can bring, and offers a true taste of paradise to the rum that invented rum. Not for nothing is it one of the world’s most awarded rums.
Nose: The perfect balance of ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla and spice.
Palate: Rich, woody and strong.
Finish: Round with a long finish.

1703
In creating 1703 Old Cask Selection, Allen Smith selected the finest rums from Mount Gay’s oldest reserves. Forty-four blends were necessary to achieve the subtle end result, perfectly balanced and harmonious.
Nose: Refined harmony between undergrowth and caramel notes.
Palate: A balance of caramel, spices and toast.
Finish: Exceptional roundness with a delicate finish.

ELIPSE
Considered by purists to be “The” Rum, Eclipse sets the benchmark for other Mount Gay rums. With its elegant amber color, it offers a luxuriantly complex aroma.
Nose: Floral and fruity notes of apricot and banana with a hint of vanilla.
Palate: Subtle impression of smokiness left by the Kentucky oak barrels in which it is aged.
Finish: Warm, balanced with a long finish.
Black Barrel
The latest creation from Maître de Chai Allen Smith, Black Barrel is a jewel of craftsmanship. Its specific finishing process releases spicy aromas that make it both balanced and bold. This rum is a blend of single and double distillates, with a higher proportion of double distillate. It is aged a second time in charcoal-burned Bourbon casks.
Nose: A subtle, complex blend of woody and spicy notes, combined with the freshness of fruit.
Palate: A subtle balance of vanilla and sweet caramel.
Finish: Warm with a bright finish.
