Fashion Preview, state of the art of Montreal fashion

A few weeks ago, we took off for Montreal, a city full of surprises and excitement. It is the crossroads of Europe and the United States, a city with a special energy that attracts many French expatriates every year. Throughout this stay we were able to meet exciting designers in fashion but also in design.

Mode Avant-Première is in its fifth edition of Fashion Preview, the must-attend fashion event in Montreal, took place on April 5, 6 and 7, 2016. Fashion shows, designer meetings, parties, sales exhibitions, contests, Fashion Preview gives a showcase to Montreal’s uninhibited fashion.

It is within the framework of the Coeur des Sciences of the UQAM that we discovered the collections of an undeniable quality, proposed by about thirty designers of ready-to-wear and fashion accessories.

They were invited to imagine a universe of their own, on the theme of Nordicity, in order to share their vision of fashion and their next collection with the public, the buyers and the media present.

Here is the portrait of this bubbling new fashion scene.

Alexandre dit Sandy
A graduate of École Supérieure de mode de Montréal, Emilie Mathieu has been active in the Quebec design scene for the past ten years. Wishing to explore the theatrical side of clothing, she entered the world of costume at the Cirque du Soleil, a determining experience that allowed her to work with the material from different angles. It was during his graduate studies at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan that his desire to launch his own men’s fashion line was revealed. She then created Alexandre dit Sandy, a young design house that in a creative spirit combines technical and innovative fabrics with men’s fashion. For several years, innovative materials have been transforming our way of life, it’s the techno-fashion movement. The line is solidly tinted with the colors of Quebec and its four seasons. The expression of the heritage is everywhere inherent: « we preserve only the essential of this past of builders and pioneers of Quebec, and this without falling into the folklorist ». His name was inspired by one of his ancestors, a man of character who inspired him greatly.

College LaSalle Collective
In this exciting world of new possibilities and solutions, strict definitions are evolving to become more fluid, established boundaries are changing and borders are becoming non-existent. By transcending class, race, and gender, a more tolerant and less judgmental world is emerging in which cultural and geographic divisions are blurring and people are beginning to move forward together. This moment of transition to a utopian, classless and more uniform society is represented by a collective collection of one-size-fits-all clothing worn by a diverse group of models. Each of the elements were designed by different graduating students of LaSalle College. A very fine performance.

Leinad Beaudet

As a child, Daniel Beaudet was already wandering among the fabrics and discovering the infinite richness of the fabrics thanks to his grandmother who took him with her when she went shopping on Saint-Hubert Street. A lively passion was then born for creation and fashion and will never leave him. Carried by a unique, feverish and biting sense of fashion, he became the first Quebecer to enter the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Three fertile years during which he explores with unreserved application the workings of the creative process, the construction of a piece, a work, a collection. Carried by his apprenticeship, he ended up working in the studios of Dries Van Noten and Hilde Frunt. From thread to fabric, his works mixed with his audacity lead him to Laos. There he perfected his skills and learned the traditional gold thread embroidery (used by Christian Lacroix and Kenzo, among others) of the former royal court of Luang Prabang. Carried by a refined spirit and a requirement that only a precise knowledge can provide, Daniel designed his first collection and the outlines of his new house in spring 2013.

Deeply Quebecois and skeptical of the internationalist discourse of the Canadian fashion industry, Daniel decided instead to be part of the history and landscape of Quebec fashion. A complex and tormented story that delights his mischievous and refined mind. A coded landscape that serves its appeal of propriety and delights in its exquisite impertinence. Daniel Beaudet then dives into reveries and offers us a universe with a clear-cut delicacy, where fantasy clashes with rigidity in which creatures with a haughty bearing, severe and funny, free and light, parade around to offer us a new aesthetic identity from Quebec that is profoundly audacious and resolutely contemporary.

In this spirit, Leinad Beaudet’s objective is to define Quebec’s aesthetic identity through the creation, production and distribution of fashionable products that value local production, the preservation of our cultural specificities and a more responsible consumption. More than a range of responsible products, Leinad Beaudet offers collections conceived as an evolving wardrobe in the line of « slow wear » allowing the modern woman to follow fashion with pragmatism and realism. This creates the basis for a lasting emotional relationship between the customer and the product.

A line of accessible luxury clothing designed and produced locally for the « contemporary » woman, denigrating ageism and catering to the whole woman and the part-entire, outside of age.

A very nice discovery with sublime materials and cuts.

Cyma House

Maison Cyma, from dream to reality

Cynthia Girard and Mary-Jo Dorval, the founders of the brand, have known each other since the cradle. From a very young age, the designers have had a keen interest in the world of fashion.

Mary-Jo, as soon as she was old enough to hold a needle, started sewing and creating unique pieces, using old curtains and scraps of fabric. Cynthia was then the model for the collections and drew some sketches. This game quickly became their favorite, so much so, that the girls decided to give it a name: Cyma design.

Today, realizing that their passion had never left them, Cynthia and Mary-Jo decided to give life to their childhood project: thus was born MAISON CYMA. Both very concerned by the leather and new fur industry and what it implies towards animals, the designers decided to integrate the concept of recycled fur and fish leather into the heart of their creative process and brand identity.

The collections of MAISON CYMA, with ethical values, are inspired by the animal force and the baroque romanticism. Their signature elements are removable recycled fur, fish leather and handmade smocking texture.
