Burberry Summer 2027: Celia Birtwell Shifts the Check

Daniel Lee has Burberry’s graphic vocabulary converse with the drawings of Celia Birtwell. The garment as worn, softened and imperfect, becomes the principle of the collection.

The check can identify a brand at first glance. For summer 2027, Burberry subjects it to Celia Birtwell’s drawing: the weave becomes gingham, then stripe, while faces and flowers enter the house’s vocabulary. In the official presentation, Daniel Lee links this work to the feeling of a garment already lived in.

A collaboration that touches the structure of the pattern
Burberry describes washed silks and cottons, shortened masculine cuts and lightweight fabrics. The trench details, belts and epaulettes, are rendered in trompe-l’œil. The Sloane bag receives braided leather; the Derby, hand-finished flowers. The project thus remains legible in its choices of material and construction, beyond the association of two names.

The critical issue lies in the relationship between recognition and variation. A heritage sign can be repeated like a signature, or become a working material. Here, the move from the check to other geometries offers this second reading: keeping a familiar starting point while changing the way the eye follows it.

Ease as an intention
The house puts forward a deliberate imperfection. This intention must be distinguished from comfort actually experienced: a collection presentation does not allow one to assess how the fabrics hold, how they drape in movement or how the pieces fare in daily life.

The collaboration therefore deserves to be judged on the room it leaves for the garment. If the pattern draws attention, the cut must continue to organise the silhouette. It is in this continuity between surface and use that Daniel Lee’s proposal is decided, more than in the sheer force of a runway image.
