The Hong Kong-born Australian designer recently presented a preview of models from his Haute-couture A/H 2014.15 collection. For this first Parisian presentation, the designer chose to unveil three models. Elegant, delicate dresses, sometimes on the cusp between Asia and the West.

A few words with the designer…

You offer an interesting, very subtle approach to Haute Couture. You’re both delicate and paradoxically conceptual. This is unusual for this category of collection.

Indeed, I appreciate being able to give a different perception. In my opinion, Haute Couture should allow us to see things differently. For example, I’m working on the notion of hearing and smelling, and I want to transcribe these highly sensory perceptions into the very heart of a model.

You’re probably thinking in particular of this black dress, here highlighted, adorned with bells. When the young woman moves, a gentle tinkle is heard. You move between poetry and humor.

I try to go beyond certain possibilities. People may or may not like it, but personally I want to endorse this kind of approach.

You don’t just suggest, your conceptualism concerns the fabric, the various materials and also touches on the shape, the pattern.

This is essential. The appearance of the black dress I mentioned earlier is reminiscent of a church bell. The sound emitted by the movement of the mannequin lends another dimension to this project. The garment and the woman wearing it are perceived differently in the space in which they move. Everyone sees and acknowledges them.

It’s a kind of game?

Exactly.

You refer to avant-garde Haute-Couture as envisioned by Poiret, Chanel, Schiaparelli and others. You offer a different way of life.

I’d like to.

In July, do you plan to give a slightly different inflection?

You’ll find the same spirit, the same range of colors, but with more drama, intensity and volume.
