Who doesn’t know Barbie, that peroxide doll with the high chest, slim waist and endless legs? A doll that has become an icon the world over. Just as there are different ways of looking at the world, there are different ways of interpreting an icon. Sometimes this interpretation can approach the extreme, verging on the obsessive. Such is the case of Valeria Lukyanova, a young Ukrainian woman who has transformed herself into a veritable Barbie doll. An example of the excesses of body modification through cosmetic surgery. You might think that Valeria just wanted to look like her favorite doll, but think again.
VICE’s documentary “Space Barbie” reveals that Valeria is more than just an interpretation of Barbie. In fact, she sees herself more as a kind of spiritual guru capable of time travel, whose primary aim is to save humanity from the throes of superficiality and negative energies. She uses her physical appearance as a tool to expose her ideas, body as spokesperson. She claims that she never wanted to look like a doll, but that Barbie dolls have built their success on the concept of the perfect woman. But according to Valeria, perfection has no limits.
VICE made an exclusive visit to Valeria’s home in the Ukraine to find out what really lies behind this young woman’s glamorous appearance. Trying to unearth who the woman behind the mask really is. Because ultimately, the question this documentary asks is, what happens when the mask comes off?
