Carolyn Massey: the new gentleman

At Tranoï, the London Show Room Men perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the capital. In an energetic and sparkling atmosphere, Carolyn Massey presents her latest collection.

Carolyn Massey, based in effervescent East London, is a designer who graduated from the Royal College of Art and whose work focuses on the wear and tear of clothing over time.

Clearly obsessed with detail, the designer likes to include military elements in her collections.

Shoulder tabs and epaulets add “hold” to jackets and coats, which are worn either open or, on certain occasions, with a belt.

Knits and shirts are slightly oversized or too long. They are sometimes worn under a T-shirt with patch pockets.

Mittens, scarves, brooches and belts… accessories are an integral part of the garment; in fact, they are an extension of it.

For summer 2011, the designer has prepared a capsule collection of shoes and a new line of bags, featuring backpacks and doctor’s cases.

The silhouettes breathe masculinity, unlike many of her compatriots who play on English dandyism, Carolyn prefers to present us with typically British gentlemen. The cuts and volumes are sober, but it’s clear that these collections are full of research and subtlety. Grays, petrol blues and creams are the basic color palette. Rust, mineral and navy blue are added for summer 2011.

As far as materials are concerned, we’re forgetting the frills of merino wool, cotton twill and poplin, as well as a whole range of leathers.

These choices enable her to create pieces that are sophisticated yet easy to wear and combine in everyday life.

Carolyn is undoubtedly the young British talent of the moment.

Awarded by the British Fashion Council, she also inaugurates the NewGen Award. This award will enable her to officially present her collection at London Fashion Week in September 2010.

In addition to her Fashion Week participation, Carolyn Massey is one of ten winners of the On Stage Project, a competition organized by Vogue Italia to support new fashion talent. She will have the opportunity to collaborate with Italy’s leading textile companies and take part in the competition’s collective fashion show.

The designer can be found at Assos and La Bergerie in Marseille, among other stores.
